Though now when some data dvd's are being read and explorer opens with the layout minute latr the drive will try read the disk and ill get a not responding message in explorer. Yet on another pc the same disks are having no problem

- herers a more indepth look at my problem since i didnt post to muc info before.
im having problems with the matshita dvd-am cd/dvd burner. At first it stopped detecting blank dvd's now it seems to be havign trouble reading data dvd's well, Alot of the time 95% it either reads them as blank or if it can read the layout it freezes trying to read any of the data in explorer. the brands of disk im using are tdk and vertabim which are working fine on my other pc's burner.
Ive checked the driver and is reported that it isnt corrput and it working properlyive also checked for firmware updates and ive used disk tools on nero and most dvd's im getting an unknown disk media and hardware error.(tdk gold dvd-r) I also ran a disc lens cleaner twice through and still no luck.
I dont get any error msg from windows though either the disk is coming up as blank/freezez when explorer opens and starts scanning the disk or after scanning for a little bit the drive automatically ejects the dvd.
the drive is empty or the media format is unreadable was the reported error coming back to me and the birmomg software nero says the disks are unkown or there is none inserted when i run disk info tools.
Just to double check ive deleted and reinstalled the driver, and i tried booting into safemode to see if it was a software conflict and no such luck there.
im getting Hardware error when i use disk info tools in nero
when i try to burn i get these errors:
Error Code: 1003 (or 1004) (from nero when i try to burn)

Get a lens cleaning disc and run it following the instructions. You likely have dust or dirt on the lens which is making it difficult to read the blank DVDs. This is aq common problem that has a simple solution (They run about $10).

I have the same drive but it will read and write CD's and it seems ok with some makes of DVD-/+RW discs, but it will not read DVD ROMS or write DVD-/+R's. Not tried cleaning the lense yet. I've had the laptop for almost 2 years and have rarely used the drive. I have seen lense cleaners for sale, but they cost almost as much as a replacement drive off ebay would cost. Is this a known issue with these drives? Do they become a bit ropey after a while?
