Are you using the bobbin especially designed for that function? Did you use the plastic template? Setting up for endless bobbin winding is quite involved, and it's easy to skip a step and make a mistake. It took me several tries to set mine up.. Frankly, once I finally got it set up, I wasn't thrilled. It doesn't hold a lot of thread, and it was quite frequently interrupting the project to wind more thread on the bobbin.

SOURCE: Problem with winding thread onto

first you must make sure the winder shaft is turning by moving it to the right a little and see if you can turn it by hand.
If it is turning ok then there is a rubber ring on the other end of the winder shaft and it should come in contact with the drive which turnes it ,if it is worn it might need a new rubber.

It sounds like you don't have any tension on the thread when winding the bobbin. Make sure that you are running the thread through the tension disc on the top of the machine before going to the bobbin winder.

slide plate may be worn - i had the same problem. try holding down the center of the bobbin with a pin while slide plate is in the winding position.

SOURCE: Singer Sewing Machine model 9224. Bobbin thread

If you turn the handwheel, can you see a metal ring rotating around the outer edge of the bobbin case? If not rotating, broken gear or timing belt off.
If that ring is turning, remove the needle plate and bobbin case. As this ring now rotates, you will a finger on the ring that will pass behind the needle from right to left and it should catch the thread from the eye of the needle. If this finger, the "hook" passes above the eye, you have a timing problem.

Let me know.

I have a new Bernina 350 and the bobbin doesn't wind on evenly. If left to do it automatically it ends up wrapped around the bobbin spool. Is this normal?

the thread has to be pretty tight around the bobbin tension guide
but I would suggest if you can't get it to wind correctly to have it check to see if there is a problem with it

I have a singer touch tronic sewing machine. I need to fill the bobbin and I cannot get it to work. where can I buy more bobbins that have already been filled to fit my machine

Has the bobbin winder worked in the past and now faulting. Or are you unsure on how to use it?

There is a manual for a Touchtronic 2000 here http://www.singerco.com/uploads/download/432_touchtronic.pdf there may be more than one model Touch Tronic so plse check the serial number plate on the side of your machine to establish the actual model number, usually near the power inlet plug. then search for the appropriate manual at http://www.singerco.com/accessories/instruction-manuals. This excerpt shows that you wind the bobbin insitu in the bobbin case.

I'm not a fan of prewound bobbins, far better to deal with the bobbin winder issue. Winding your own thread means you can get far better colour matching to the fabric, and ensure you've got quality thread on the machine, and same thread top and bottom. (I prefer a quality cotton wrapped polyester or a polyester thread, Guttermann, Molynecke or Sylko Supreme). All of these factors affect stitching quality and the finished appearance of a seam.

Did you know that you can buy a freestanding unit to wind bobbins? Link to this item is here. http://www.sewingpartsonline.com/universal-automatic-bobbin-winder.aspx You may well find that this is the better solution to winding bobbins for this machine as winding them inside the bobbin housing doesn't give you a lot of control over the way the thread feeds onto the bobbin.

The bobbin winds really loose and uneven and then gets caught up when I'm sewing. I've checked I'm threading it correctly when winding... seems to be worse with polyester and embroidery thread. Help!

You need to keep tension on the thread spool as you wind the bobbin to avoid this from happening. Also, is there a little tension device to take the thread around between the spool and the bobbin winder? Some machines have a little silver button tensioner purely for bobbin winding to keep the thread flowing smoothly.

But I always do the following anyway just to ensure a smooth bobbin. Take the thread from your spool, through the eyelet or tensioner, then back to the bobbin and put the tail end up through a hole in the top of the bobbin. Now put the bobbin onto the winder and click it against the stop. Place the curved handle of a pair of scissors onto the top of the thread spool and apply some gentle pressure to stop the spool from bouncing and jumping while winding off. Keep doing this through the winding process.

Start the bobbin winding mechanisim, its a button on my Janome 6500, yours might be a little different. HOLD the thread tail until you've got coverage over the whole bobbin area catching the starting point. Stop, trim the thread tail off top of the bobbin with scissors, then restart winding again. Watch as the thread winds and give it a nudge with your finger tip to the top or bottom so the bobbin winds evenly across the whole spool's width.

Best analogy here is when you wind the garden hose onto the reel, if it goes on all over the place you never get the whole length on neatly, but if you wind it on neatly in an even tight coil across the spool, then back again, then repeat, you get a tidy hose. But just wind madly, it all builds up in the middle, you can't get it all onto the reel, and it won't pull out nicely next time you need it. Same thing with your SM thread.

Polyester and silky embroidery threads will be worse too as they are silky, so if the thread hasn't been wound on smoothly and under tension, then it will "collapse" with gravity, then when you use the bobbin, the thread is going to be caught on itself, will feed unevenly and be stretched, then loose, giving you less than perfect stitch tension.

My other bobbin tip is store the bobbins in a plastic bobbin tray so they are lying on their edges and under a cover. Keeps them neater and they are less likely to unwind stray threads around your sewing cabinet if you store them on the spool pins build onto the cabinet door - and it keeps the thread dust free. But I do not keep thread on bobbins for long, prefer to wind a fresh one off a new spool when I start a project and can usually complete a garment with a 3/4 filled bobbin, use the remaining few metres for handsewing, then junk the rest. Then I put the thread spool that is left back into a sealed takeway container to keep it away from UV, dust and moisture.

I hope this assists you with your machine and certainly if this doesn't resolve the bobbin issues, then I'd suggest you visit your dealer and ask them to demonstrate the technique on your machine to see if there is a technical issue with it.

Improper bobbin winding

Check the manual for your machine to make sure you are feeding the thread through the correct guides and connecting with the bobbin as indicated.

I was doing fine zigzag, ran out of bobbin thread did not change any thing and now the thread bunches on the bottom and the machine does not advance. Bobbin casing pop up also this is a 774 model

Hi there,

Well The most probable cause of the lower thread breaking is an improperly wound bobbin. Regardless of where you wind the bobbin, inside the machine, on the top of the hand wheel or on the front side near the hand wheel, the basic "bobbin" rules apply.

** Always start with an empty bobbin. Never wind one color over another color.
** Don't wind the bobbin so full that it would be tight and hard to insert into the bobbin case. Most machines have an automatic "shut off" when the bobbin gets full, but if yours does not, be careful not to fill it too full.
** Wind the bobbin evenly across and in level layers.
** Never mix different sizes of thread in the bobbin and on the spool, unless you're doing sewing machine embroidery or some specialty type of sewing. Using different weights of thread on the spool and in the bobbin for general sewing will cause ragged stitches as well as other stitching problems.
So clean all the threads and do it work from start.........
Please reply ......
Thanks

Was in the middle of embroidering and it just froze up and stopped sewing, thought maybe it was just to over worked cause I begun to smell something so shut it down in hopes that in the morning it would be...

I had the same problem happen to me. I had the machine serviced twice already - but I embroider a whole lot. One of the problem is that your machine needs to be oiled, and the other problem - which seems to be a major flaw, when the automatic bobbin winds, it sometimes winds the thread around the bobbin cup (the metal part where the plastic cup sits in to hold the bobbin). When this happens, the machine start to make almost like a swooshing sound and then it stops working. I can't even raise the needle. Check if that is the problem, then you have to take the embroidery scissors and cut the thread and then carefully pull it out with the tweezers. It's time consuming and frustrating but it can be done. Please check your machine about the thread and let me know.

Embroidery pattern trouble

When mine did this, I had a little tiny bit of thread stuck in the winding path of the endless bobbin. After I cleaned it of all thread, it went back to perfect work.

In embroidery mode, you have to send a design to the machine before the bobbin winder will work.

Machine embroidery

You should always use proper Bobbin Thread for embroidery - not a bobbin wound from regular dressmaking thread. You are right, the special bobbin thread is thinner so that the embroidery thread will be pulled to the underside and you get a nice shiny embroidery on top with no bobbin showing through. Wind yourself 6 or more bobbins at a time of bobbin thread to always have some on hand, or buy the pre-wound L size ones.
All embroidery machines - no matter what brand - recommend using bobbin thread for embroidery. It is readily available at all sewing stores, probably even Spotlight would carry some. If you get stuck for a supply, try overlocker thread.
