Check the switch connected to the brake curcuit.
As you suspect, that is more than likely the problem.
Good luck.

2010 Troy built 42 inch riding mower with auto transmission : mower has to have brake pedal depressed to start. It starts fine - let of the brake pedal and the motor stalls out . What is wrong ???

Most of these machines have similar saftey systems.

If you apply the parking brake the engine should continue to run.

If the brake is released and the operator is not in the drivers seat then the motor will stop.

If the operator is in the seat and the seat presence switch is working properly the motor will continue to run as the brake is released.

If the weight of the operator is low (skinny little kid) then the seat presence switch will not activate the motor will stop.

If the switch is defective no matter how heafty the operator is the motor will stop.

There are other components in the electrical system that the switch connects to that could also be the problem

Start with the switch

Hope this helps?

Engine runs but stalls when engaged

This sounds like a micro switch, or relay issue, it is not stalling it is being switched off, if there are some relays on the back of the bulk head replace them, they are just a push fit.

The mower will stall when I lift my foot off the brake.

If you have a gear transmission, you have some safety switches. One under the seat. One on the clutch -brake pedal. These switches work together to prevent accidental injury. One may have disconnected or a wire frayed. If one switch has failed it will shut the mower off.

Craftsman hydrostatic strains but won't go forward or reverse

Hi,
There is a brake lever attached to your transaxle, that when activated, pushes dowel pins which serve as brake pistons, against a brake pad which presses against a disk from your transaxle...whew. Much like a disk break on your car.
The pistons, or dowel pins may be sticking, causing you to be "riding your brake". A little disassembly and some good ole WD-40 might loosen up the bind.
Good luck!

There is another safety switch connected to the parking/service brake. Check that one too. Sounds like its the one.

Engine stalls when clutch/brake pedal is released

Under the seat, there is a operator presence switch, if this switch fails, the mower will shut off when the brake is released, or put in any gear.
