Question about Buffalo Technology 1TB DriveStation TurboUSB (2x500) External Hard Drive

1 Answer

1 TB is beeping

I recently started using the 1TB Buffalo External Hard Drive and it worked fine for about 30 minutes, then i put my laptop (using Vista) to sleep and came back 45 minutes later to boot it up and it did not recognize the hard drive, I have tried restarting both the computer and the hard drive and all it does is beep constantly unless i turn the device off... Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

After doing some research it seems the beeping means that there is a disk failure.

Prop off the front of the unit, remove the drive and replace it. The unit will automatically rebuild the drive, which takes about 8 hours

dropping it while turned on is fatal as it usually damages the write heads and/or the platters.
if it hit the floor, changes are it's physically damaged the mechanism.
recovering data from a drive with this damage is not cheap as you will have to send it away to be rebuilt. It's impossible to rebuild it yourself.

1tb external hard drive wont appear in my computer

Have you "Formatted" it before you used it, If NOT, Right Click on drive and select "Format" format NTFS. After this you should be able to use the drive as normal. Also Right Click, MY Computer, choose "Manage" when it comes up select Disk Management, and you can initialise it and format there.

Samsung 1tb external will not allow my computer to boot

Try checking your bios to see what harddrive the computer boots from.
Your PC might be trying to boot from that samsung story which I assume doesn't have an OS installed.

Beeping

are you giving it good ventilation. you may also be having a hard drive failure that is coming. I had a western digital drive that did the same thing I am still able to copy files, i ran hard rive testers to see if its faulty and it comes back fine. But i also dont use it as much. I would moveall data off it and reformat it to see if that fixes it. do it in small sessions though, move as much as it can handle. cut it off for a little and try some more till its been completely removed. then lower level format it and see if it can just sit on with no data without beeping. it may just need a better fan or ventilation to keep it cooler. HEAT is the enemy

Problem with buffalo 1tb external hard drive

If you're using windows XP then go to start > control panel > administrative tools > computer management > disk management. See if the disk is showing up there but hasn't been allocated a drive letter, if it hasn't then right click on that drive and press "assign drive letter". Be sure to do it to the right one, you could quite easily change another drive's letter by accident otherwise.
