My concern is the Hard Drive. Any thought in this direction?

    Modular bay

This is the symbol that is showing, I checked the ports, swapped out the CD Drive to 3.5 / on-off / all the things mentioned in the On Line manual - No change

Does anyone have any advice for this situation?

Hi there - I did check the power cord and it had broken wires. I replaced this piece and the same problem continued - Could the laptop battery need time to recharge or could the black power pack be in trouble?

  • jeb923 Nov 18, 2007

I took my old power supply in and it was cross reference with the after market one. I just plugged it in and it displayed the same problem. I am going to let it charge for awhile and see what happens - Could it be something Inside, like the mother board - There is power bacause the fan still runs, but no other life

  • jeb923 Nov 19, 2007

What does a Charger Board actually do and located?

  • jeb923 Nov 19, 2007

I just signed on with a Gateway Techician - I will see if they have any known problems and let you know from there

  • jeb923 Nov 19, 2007

I just finished dealing with a Chat-Tech on the internet - He helped me run a bunch of different things - Nothing corrected the problem - I will have to send the laptop back for service - Sounds like the safest thing to do then start fooling with it myself

Tom - You have been a wonderful help and very patient - Thank you for all of your help ... - jeb923 -

Laptop goes

You must, when using an external monitor, either press the relative 'F' key to switch the external signal on or boot with the external monitor plugged in to get it to work.

I have a XPS M1530 the screen is black I press the power button for a second it stay on everything lights up sounds and feels like its on gets warm but nothing on the screen Itrying everything taking out...

You either have a Video Card problem or an issue with your LCD Screen.

Does it every post anything to the screen? If nothing ever posts on the screen when you hit the power button and it will not do anything with an external monitor, then your Video Card is bad. I wonder if you have the Nvidia Graphics Video card on your system?

If it seems like the laptop booted up all the way (you hear fans running, hard drive spinning, see lights) but the screen is black then try the steps below.

Shine a flashlight on the dark screen to see if you barely see the icons on the desktop. If so, then the LCD Inverter is bad.

Plug in an external monitor and see if the display shows up on it. It can be any kind of monitor even the old big fat crt monitors as long as it has a vga cable to connect to your computer's vga port. If so that proves your video card is ok. The video will show on most systems when you reboot without you having to do anything. Some systems will require you to hit the FN (Function key) + F1 thru F12. Hold down the FN key then hit the correct key for displaying on the monitor (F1 thru F12). The correct key will normally have CRT/LCD on it or it will have the icon of a display.

If you see no icons by shinning a flash light and the external monitor works, then your screen is bad. If you see no icons by shinning the flash light and nothing shows on the external monitor, then most likely your video card is bad.

My sony vaio vgn fs790 would'nt start up all it does is light up all of the three lights located near the power button and the lights near the battery indicator too, and they stay on. then it...

It sounds like you may be having a video related issue. These issues may indicate that you have a problem with either your video card or your lcd screen. To isolate the issue, you have to connect an external monitor to the VGA port of the portable system. There should be an S2 button on your laptop which should allow you to switch videos. Press that and if the video appears on the monitor, then it is an issue with the LCD screen. If nothing happens, you have a video card failure. These are due for replacement already.

Hello I have a problem with my Toshiba Satellite L300D. When I start the laptop it shows just a black screen. I hear it working but the display shows nothing. Also it is really hot near the fan, but I can...

try to attach an external monitor and see if it works ..if it does it means that something is wrong with the screen ..either the ribbon or the back-light or something like that ..
do not forget to activate the external monitor with Fn +F4
if it do not work with external monitor either ..than probably its the ram memory or the video card ..I wil open the back where the ram memory is ..and remove them and put them back ..If you have more than on e..just insert one at the time cause one might be damaged ..
also try to insert a operation system disk ..and see if it boots from the disk this case you just messed with the video card settings ..but I doubt cause it should show at least some writing before going blind.. but if it do not show anything its usually from the display ..(in this case will work with an external one ..)

We have the monitor hooked to a docking station for a laptop. I can not view the screen on the Viewsonic, but does display on laptop. I have been able to do an extende monitor view, but not the main view....

when you connect external monitor to a laptop u get two options in the monitor section of graphic properties tab

1.) extended
2.) clone

it is clear from ur post that u are using extended view

try using clone mode then both laptop screen and external monitor will show the main screen

other method is to disable the laptop screen and just allow external monitor to work, in this case laptop screen shows nothing but external monitor shows main screen

ACER cracked screen..external monitor???

Hi there.
The keyboard toggle you are using is the correct one.
Sometimes you have to hit Fn + F5 a couple of times to stay on there is no real set time. Make sure Fn + F6 is on so the laptop screen stays on.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!!

Powers up but black screen shows

1st - Try pressing <Fn> + <BrithnessUP> keys a few times, (on HP <Fn> key is between <Ctrl> key and <Windows> key, <BrightnessUP> key is <F8> key and <BrightnessDown> key is <F7> key. If nothing happens try the 2nd one.
2nd - Plugin external monitor, (type and size doesn't matter). Turn on your laptop. If you can see desktop on the external monitor, your drivers are o.k., The problem is your laptop display, NOT the graphic chip.

Data Shows up only on External Monitor, not on Laptop Screen

If your system won't display anything w/o the external monitor. there's something wrong with the LCD's backlight. you may have to contact your laptop's manufacturer and check if this laptop is still under warranty. you may have to get the lcd replaced.

Trouble with running a secondary monitor from my laptop

Hello tonyphats,

How are you trying to use the monitor? Just connecting it to the laptop? I know on most laptops you have to select to use the external monitor it won't just come up. You usually have to hold down the 'Fn' button and then press 'F5' or 'F7' to toggle between - monitor only, monitor and lcd, and lcd only.

If you are trying that, what happens? Does anything show on the screen?
