Hi,

Change ram bank, clean your ram, try to load windows by pressing F8 key and then in Safe Mode.

Sony Vaio VGN-SZ460N - freezes on System Recovery

I put my money on that you have a CPU over temperature problem, and/or intermittent RAM problem.

Be sure you are ESD safe when working on the electronics as follow !

I suggest, using a eye piece magnifier and a wooden tooth pick and carefully touch each pin of your RAM sockets and see if the soldering is bad, allowing the pin to move slightly. If that happens, well it needs re-soldering there, make sure you use leaded solder, not the ROHS crapp.

If that turns out to be ok, then check your processor. It might over heat.
You may want to observe if the CPU fans runs at all and if it runs at full speed most the time, even if you don't run any 'heavy' programs. This usually would indicate poor heat dissipation. Most Sony Laptops have a piece of thermal foam pad is used for heat transfer from the CPU chip into the heat sink. Over time this pad shrinks, effectively impeding the heat transfer causing the CPU to over heat and intermittent shutdowns ect. I suggest, find a new piece of thermal pad or replace that with a piece of copper sheet material and use Thermalloy transfer paste.

Installed new ram-went from 2 512 sticks to 2 1g sticks, the comp wont boot, only the fans come on, no lights on the power button or signal to the monitor. I put the old ram back in to see if it would...

dose the ram have mem chips on both sides of the ram stick, sometimes this causes the problems, i would sugest that you clear the Cmos, maybe take out the bios batterie and leave it unplugged for couple of hours, plug it back in and see if the old ram works ok, if it dose then maybe try the new ram maybe one stick at first.
good luck.

Boot up

ok from the symptoms you are describing your issue is low ram. If when you finally get it to boot up go to the start menu and right click on Computer or my computer. Then go to properties and tell me what the ram size is. If it is 512 mb or lower you need to increase the ram size. If this is so let me know and I will help you from there. Take care .. Mark

My Acer T180 wont boot! =.(...

This sounds potentially like a failing memory stick. From another computer download and burn Memtest to a CD and try booting from it to test your RAM.

get working processor like that of your son's system and working ram, remove both the processor and ram on the system and substitute with the new ones and try booting.

Motherboard problem

if you have tried resetting the bios by putting the jumper across pins 2-3, then back to pins 1-2 and it still wont boot into the bios and you know the memory is ok, then the bios chip on the motherboard is damaged and may not be easy to replace as the board is quite old.

Hi im Joan Hall.I have a suggestion. Please check your IDE Cables. When u reboot your computer it should say detecting IDE Cables. If it beeps that usally means that your computer has an error.See if its not the IDE Cables because they will cause your computer to beep and not boot up right.
