May be you can try the same drive in some other laptop.

But I'm really sorry but the Hard drive has bad sector because of which Bad sectors corrupt the hard drive because of which the data in the bad sectors cannot be recovered.

But you can try this as a last resort. Before some days I lost my data when I was formating my computer, It was was very important because my clients details was in my computer, Then One of my friend suggested me to use the stellar data recovery software and believe me I was able to recover all my data..( http://www.stellarinfo.com/ ) Hope this helps. else to get hard drive working fine and to remove the bad sectors to prevent further data loss it is better to format the hard drive. Atleast you can save the hard drive.

Maxtor STM380215A 80 GB pata external hard drive not recognized by xp

The thing is the missing drivers..They may be made not to use a driver and be recognized directly in some operation systems..but if you have a windows xp sp1..(home edition ) ..it will not work so well in what matter the drivers for devices..My advice is to reinstall teh windows and use a windows xp sp3 ..if your computer can not handle the windows 7 one ..and will work ..
Or ..look over the internet and try to locate the driver needed for this hard disk .and install it ...IUt is probably a generic driver , but just missing from your system .
Another issue may be the port used..Not all usb ports work or have power ..or just be a 1.0 port that will not support the plugged device ..try to use another port and see if it works .usually these hard disks are on 3.0 usb ..now a days

Mhy maxtor external hard drive is not being recognized by my computer. What do I need to do?

Does it work when connected to a different computer?
If not, is it still under warranty?
If not, disassemble the case, and you'll find an "internal" MAXTOR disk-drive inside the case; try connecting that drive as a "slave" disk-drive inside your computer. If it is not recognized, then it is "dead" and you should take a hammer to it, so that any of your personal data on it will become impossible for any "identity-thief" to read, and then buy a new, larger, external drive.

Maxtor one-touch mini won't appear on PC

To isolate the problem, please try the steps below:

1. Make sure that the USB ports of your PC are working.
2. Try to connect the device into different USB ports.
3. Try to connect it into different Windows based computer.

Question: Did you reformat this device using your Mac? If yes, there could be a possibility that the device was reformatted using the Mac OSX (Journaled). This type of format would only recognized by Mac computers.

But if it's formatted using the DOS based system, it would work on both Mac and PC.

Installing the external drive

In XP and Vista no need to install.
They will detect automatically.
To know, goto Windows explorer.
Find drive letter other than your local drive.
Usually called "removable disk".

Erase and reformat to be compatible with new mac

Think I might have solved it myself. Here's how:

Open Disk Utilities and select the external hard drive. Select the "Erase" tab. Hit "Erase" at the bottom right.

That's all. Just dragged a folder onto it and it worked.
