Dlink router, Dell laptop - no connectivity - won't renew IP

I have a Dell laptop and a Dlink router DIR 615. My laptop was working fine up until 2 days ago. PC which is directly connected to router still working fine. Laptop started occassionally not connecting to; but if I typed in it would connect. Then nothing would work. Then I got the yellow triangle with the exclamation mark and a message 'Limited or no connectivity'. It looks as if I have network availability - little green bars in lower right corner. So I ran the "repair" utility. Tells me 'cannot renew IP address. Contact network administrator' (me!) I ran the NETSH reset stuff from a command prompt. I shut down my router and rebooted. I've shut down both computers, ad nauseum. Turned off my firewall. Tried a winsocket fix. Tried a system restore to a good working date. NOTHING is working. I am totally stumped. Really aggravating. Can anybody shed some light on this. Alot of people are having this it little green men? HELP!!!

Thank you for this. OK last night after I posted this I reset both the router and the modem. I held the reset button with power on for several seconds. Then on the router the little light that looks like a globe went yellow. It stayed like that for quite a while. Then I actually unplugged the router and plugged it back in. Didn't wait 10 to 15 minutes tho (so I'll try that tonight). When I plugged the router back in, it lit up all green. So was the modem. I had also at the same time shut down the pc and the laptop. I powered everything back up and of course the router had been reset to factory (no security - no SSID). I had internet on both pc and laptop at this point. I put the security stuff back on my network (SSID, network key etc) and then WHAM-O the laptop is back to not renewing the IP and no connectivity. I am really frustrated and annoyed by this. DLink's website is hopeless (helpless??). I'm gonna try the longer cold reboot tonight. But I have a feeling it's gonna be the same deal - I'll get internet if I go public with the network - if I try to put security on it, I'll be back to square one. Darn IT!!!!! Thank you, though!!!! I'll post back with what happens.

Oh gee. I want to say a big THANK YOU for this. The cold reboot is EXACTLY what worked. This problem IS solved. I am up and functioning. Thank you so MUCH. This was so helpful. I did exactly what you said. I unplugged the router for at least 15 minutes. Then I plugged it in and just let it sit for about 1/2 hour. Then I tried my laptop. IP address is back to normal and I logged right into the internet. WOW. Thanks again. Sheesh!!!

Resetting netsh was a good start. I would suggest starting with pulling the power on the router for about 5 to 10 minutes and then plugging it back in. give it a couple of minutes to reconnect to the modem and then try connecting to it again wirelessly. I had an issue with my dlink gigabit that stumped me and a cold reboot was the only thing that worked

Dlink DIR 615, network name changed, won't accept password

It appears your brother has changed your wireless router settings.
You can reset the Dlink back to the default settings by -
Power off the Dlink and press and hold the RESET button on the back of the Dlink and the power on the Dlink. Hold the RESET button for 5 secs. until the LEDs flash at the same time.
Connect a LAN cable from the computer to the Dlink. Open a browser and enter the Dlink's configuration URL
Default login = admin
PW = blank (just press Enter)
You can now change the admin password and set up a new passphrase (ie encryption)

Just bought a dlink DIR 615 and I have to constantly be restarting it.

1. See if you have the router next to a cell phone, cordless phone, or microwave. If the router is in the basement this may drop connection.Move the router to the next upper floor.
2. release/ renew the ip with ipconfig
3. Check with the ISP that there are no cable or drop problems at your premise.

I have 2 laptops one is dell and one toshiba. I installed new router dlink 615 and I am connected on toshiba but not with dell. What might be the problem?

Check for the IP settings, ensure that they are in sync with the settings of your router. For example, setup your computer to use automatically provided IP if your router assigns one; otherwise else push a manual/static IP.
