How to replace a compaq presario 1255 cmos battery

It appears that my old laptop needs a new cmos battery. I called Best Buy and they say they have the battery. My question is how do I install it?
Thank you so much!

Would you know if the battery is soldered in on this model or if I can just pop it in once I find it?

  • Debbie in PA Nov 17, 2007

Just one more question and I think I'm ready to give it a try. I was told at Best Buy that I can't just take the CMOS (RTF) battery out and put the new one in without losing the settings - that I would have to "trick" the laptop into thinking that the battery has not been changed by sliding the new one over the old one. Is this correct? Right now the laptop is still running but very slowly - it hasn't completely died yet.

    Thank you!

You have to take the case apart and find the old battery. It sounds like a large tast but you can pull it of in about 20 min.locate all the screws on the underside of the keyboard part of the laptop remove the main battery as ther may be a screw or 2 in the battery case once you are sure that you have removed all of the screws try seperating the 2 parts of the case sometimes they have clips that snap both parts together you can loosen then with a flathead if you find them by pressing inward and releasing them.once you have opened the case locate the battery and replace it .YOU CAN DO IT!

It can be either, but I have been able to take them out even though they are soldered, just take a small flathead and carefully pry the top off the battery.Usually they are not soldered but being soldered shouldnt stop you.If you want to ..You can take a soldering gun and press it to the top of the peice of metal that the battery is soldered to,usually that isnt needed.Good Luck!

If you have made custom settings in BIOS or any changes, they will be lost .But chances are if you havnt had any major upgrades, the BIOS will default to the original settings which will work just fine.Sometimes people have to alter the BIOS settings to install a second harddrive or a CD burner or other internal hardware upgrades. Also when people OVERCLOCK there CPU's these settings in BIOS are critical. When they change the battery they lose these settings and they have to reconfigure the cmos to their preffered settings.Unless you have mades specific changes in your BIOS then your safe.I have had to change several batteries and it always goes smooth. Also there is no special trick to swap the batteries.Im not sure why the gentleman at Best buy told you that you had to trick the Bios.when your computer boots up again I beleive it will ask you to cange the system time and date but after that your fine. One more thing,A dying CMOS battery will not cause your computer to slow down.Make sure your Anti virus is up to date and use spyware doctor to scan for any spyware.also try removing unused programs

After you have removed the keyboard and you are facing the processor, the CMOS is located under a small printed circuit board (PCB) to the left of the processor. This small PCB is fixed by two screws that you have to remove and it is also connected to the main board so don't be afraid to pull it up after the 2 screws are removed. The CMOS is a CR1220, 3V.

Compaq Presario CQ60-215DX. Doesn't start

You will need to buy a new battery, there is no way old one will be OK. To see if it works, remove battery, and use wall adapter ONLY, PC should work fine. If not maybe Flat CMOS, replace, If replace and still NO go.must be bad motherboard (maybe try charge battery 5 hours left alone)

you will need to open your computer and look inside. if you are not sure take to a repair centre, the battery is on the motherboard, thats why you need to take really if you are going to be doing it. But i would advised to get a IT guy to do it for you. once its taken out you need to replace it with a new one.
