Question about IBM ThinkPad R51 Notebook
It appears the hard drive is faulty.
Does the hard disk LED flash when the laptop boots up?
Go into the BIOS configuration and see it the hard drive is detected, (then Startup - Boot - and look at IDE HDD0 it should list the make and model of the hard drive).
If the hard disk is detected it still could be faulty. To test the hard drive, remove the hard drive and connect it to an USB hard drive adapter and connect it to a working computer's USB port.
If the computer sees this as an external hard drive and you can open the various folders and files then the hard drive is OK and the fault could be the disk controller on the laptop's motherboard.
If the hard disk is not detected the it is faulty and you need to replace the hard drive in the laptop and install Windows etc. to get it working again.
