How do i get missing ntldr back

you are missing a key boot file for windows that is special to XP.

Load your installation disk.
.
restart your computer and when the F2 setup appears in right bottom corner (right after starting) press the F8 key (couple of times) and choose CDrom drive. (if you miss, try CTRL ALT DELETE--to reboot and try again.

(if that does not work, you will have to go into F2 setup and tell the computer to boot from the CDROM--you will find it by looking on each tab for a list of CDROM, Hard Drive, and listing of boot disk priority. Save you change by exiting BIOS set with F10.

At this point you can choose R for repair.
windows should repair itself. Once done, PC will reboot and you should be good.

** if other files are suddenly missing or other weird things, I would recommend a new install of windows. You should have up to date files for antivirus and malware.

Tried to install xp instead of vista, now bootmgr is missing.

First you will need the SATA driver already saved on a memory stick. Now go into the BIOS and change the boot order: put the cd first then the hard disk second, save the new setting and reboot. Put the XP install and reboot again, the install will start. When instructed to input extra drivers plug in the memory stick and point to it. After that don't forget to install all the other drivers from here.

Was given inspiron 5000e laptop- / can it be

Yes, you can upgrade to windows XP but it will require upgrading the memory to the maximum supported memory of 512 MB. It is set up with PC100. I would suggest going with PC133 when you upgrade the memory. Be advised though that the PC100/PC133 memory is expensive new but you can usually shop around and find it used for a cheaper price. The 800MHz processor will support the XP operating system.

Winxp cannot boot - missing files message

Just make sure you get these files on your computer.
Download hal.dll from here:

http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?hal

Place it in windows\system32 folder.

Now go to the drive you have windows installed in (C:/ for example), and then create a new file, name it boot.ini.

Open boot.ini with notepad, and enter this:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS /usepmtimer
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /usepmtimer
Save boot.ini now, and try booting your computer, it should work.
