The first screen that pops up now says "Map Data is locked. Please contact customer support for an unlock code." A screen or two later I get a message that says "map data not present. Please insert data card with valid map data". One did not come with the unit that I am aware of (it was purchased in '04)
I called customer support and they said that it's a hard drive problem and that I should send in the unit and pay $201 for an upgrade. I called a day later hoping to get a better solution - different guy, same suggestion.

The map may be unselected or locked. There's information at the link below on how to select your map. Go to paragraph 5. If this doesn't solve the problem start at paragraph 2 of the same link for details of how to unlock your map.
The article deals with all possible reasons for there being no map data available but if your satnav is working other than that it may be just that the map is not selected. If you can get into the menus first try selecting the map by pressing TOOLS then SETTINGS or LOCALE on models that don't have a settings menu Press MAP and then at the bottom of the screen press MAP INFO Your map name should be there and a box with a tick beside the name. If the box is not ticked press on the map name and it will cause the tick to appear. This might solve the problem. If not the map is probably locked. You'll find details of how to unlock the map at the above link.
First, check to make sure the map file is there. The file name is gmapprom.img. It's located in the Garmin directory. It should be 1GB in size. To do this you need to connect the Nuvi to a PC with a USB cable.
Next, please tell me what year of map you have on your unit, 2009, 2010, etc.
Them, email me your units internal serial number. Its a 10 digit number (not the number on the outside). The number starts with a "3" and can be found by pressing the tools button, then system and then "about".
You have use the unlock wizard to install the key that is provided with the software. When I bought my Mapsource CitySelect, it came with two keys. The way Garmin does it is, you can install the software as many times as you want on as many machines as you want, but can transfer the maps, data, etc ONLY to unlocked devices. Last I checked Garmin wanted $75 for additional unlocks. Some data is not locked, like Topo maps and some tide points since this data is obtained (by Garmin) from the gov't, which is free for us (wel, minus taxes we pay). Contact Garmin support, they are very attentive.
Do you have an sd card installed with mapping data on it ( a folder named garmin)? Or a defective sd card?
I had this error with a copied map, seems to be an issue with a wrong or missing *.unl file, which is an unlock file for unlocking map data
