Question about Sony XM-754HX Car Audio Amplifier

1 Answer

Unit blows the fuse on power up. This happened after it was working fine at low level, next power up the fuse blows. Checked large 5600uf caps are ok, removed the four 0N05HD MOSFETS and fuse does not blow. Unable to source MOSFETs, not sure what else to test. Service manual would be handy!

Thanks Ganx. I will attempt testing the MOSFETs as per your suggestion. However they appear to be either custom made for Sony or discontinued. I can't find a data sheet for MTA50N05HD (TO-220, assume 50V-50A). Motorola references them as transferred tohttp://www.onsemi.com and no trace but the closest cross I can see is an NTP75N06L or IRL3705NS/L at www.irf.com. How critical do you think substitution is not knowing the original spec?

Hiya try
http://www.icpowerx.com for the Mosfets, you will probably need to replace driver transistors also (not always but sometimes they go). Also check the resistors to output, they will be the big white ones.
Go here to read on testing FETs
http://www.4qdtec.com/mostest.html
Just to be sure. If one is blown, replace all

Hi, i bumped into one web that claimed 500Volt 5A!!! Cant be right and cant really find any decent data.

The original spec is really important. To many variables involved from pin outs to gate current etc. All my experience with trying different rated fet have lead to getting really peed off and finding the right one or equiv in the end.

You can tryhttp://chip-sale.com and see if they can source. Check the price first as they charge premium as they deal with discontinued etc

    best of luck

Hi,
The compressor is going bad or the unit is charged wrong...
Whatever the cause the problem is the compressor locking up and blowing the fuses...
Clean the condenser coil...maybe the pressures are going too high...
If that don't work, then the compressor is shot or over charged...

Here is a tip that I wrote about how to clean your condenser

Polk Audio PSW202 subwoofer. Replaced burnt fuse but blows the next fuse after connecting to amplifier and powering on. What else can I do?

Fuse probably went bad because either the large filer capacitors at the edge of the PCB went bad and or the final output IC mounted on the heatsink(15 pin) fried. Check the capacitors and all the semiconductor components on the board for burn marks or corrosion. You have to remove the heat sink clamp from in front of the output IC to adequately visualize its condition. In fact you might have to remove the large aluminum heatsink attached to the chassis to get a good view of the IC. If it or the heat sink clamp show signs of thermal burns you need to replace it. The IC is a TS TDA7294 mono audio amp available at Mouser Electronics. Replace the 35V 4700mF caps with 50V 4700mF caps. You will only have enough space on the top of the PCB for one of the larger caps. I mounted the other on the circuit side of the board. Note the polarity of the original caps and respect it in their replacements. The fuse is a 5 X 20 medium speed slow blow 250V 2.0A glass fuse.

Generac NP 50G wont crank

Measure voltage drop across the far ends of the fuse wiring (should measure zero), as one of the wires or it's connection to either end of the fuse may be open. Check the battery negative grounding connection at the frame. If all ok, you may need to find a wiring diagram for the machine. Does this unit have a low-oil-level switch which will kill the engine if set?

Unit is dead, no display no turn on Worked fine one day, dead the next

it maybe the internal fuse tht has blown all microwaves have a monitor fuse inside some where the mains power comes in and some on the control pcb it does mean that a short circuit has accured but it can happen if the door is slammed you will need to remove the top cover of the unit to find the fuse and be very careful inside everything is very sharp and door make sure it is unpluged also inside a microwave i a large capacitor this can store power even with the unit off it should be grounded b4 working on the unit but a long as you are just changing the fuse you should ok do if you can use insulated pliers for your own safety,if u fit a new fuse and it blows again thn my advise would be to take it to a a repair shop as the high voltage side of your microwave is up to 4000-5000 volts

Tv power will not come on.

Check Fuse if you inclined to open the cabinet, there is a fuse right next to a large cap size looking unit, see if its has foggyness to it or its burned, go to radioshack and request the right polarity and amps or you could blow the main psu. Good luck

Sony str-de845 Powers up, relay clicks, fuses BLOW!

This condition, may be produced by defective components (Q506, Q507). you can remove those transistor, replace the fuses, power-on and wait for relays click. if the fuses not blown again, them replace both transistor.

Blowing fuses in power supply

One thing to check, would be the filter capacitator that is on the front circuit board. They are known to become shorted. The cap is fairly large, and may be mounted on the side of the circuit board that faces the front panel. Clip one lead, and apply power. If the fuse does not blow, then that is it. A second possible component, is the polarity protection diode, that is near the power jack, next to the fuse. If it is shorted, then the fuse will blow every time.

Sony xm-1652z 1000 watt amp

a loose or corroded connection can cause this problem...do not overlook possible loose fuse holder...also look into remote control line...also check speaker line for a loose or shorted connection...a loose connection in any of these locations can cause a spike in the current drawn from the power supply... a bad speaker can play at low volume but short at high volume; if the flex wires from frame to cone on the speaker start to fail, it happens at high volume first, and sounds like a crackle, and gradually becomes present at lower levels; a voice coil can warp at high signal levels, causing it to short intermittently, in addition, you might check the cooling capability of the amp...i don't recall whether you have a fan on this amp...
