Question about LaCie Hard Disk 320GB with Hi-Speed USB2.0 USB 2.0 Hard Drive

1 Answer

I have a LaCie 320GB hard drive that accidentally fell off my computer tower. The tower itself is on the floor, so it only fell about 20 inches at most, but when it fell, it was in the middle of transferring some files and it froze. I unplugged it, restarted my computer and when I plug it in again the computer doesn't recognize it. It's also making a soft buzzing noise that it may or may not have done all along, but I'm noticing it now. Any suggestions that don't involve me losing everything? :( Thanks so much!

The only thing I can think of to try is to actually remove the drive from the enclosure and connect to the computer internally. Of course that will void the warranty, but if you are technical enough to do that, it may work inside the computer.

In other words, the problem may not be with the drive, but instead with the enclosure.

Although I would guess the drive is shot, as it was writing to the disk when it was dropped.

Sorry for the bad news...

How do i recover data from my old LaCie 320gb External Hard Drive?

You MAY POSSIBLY be able to take the raw hard drive out of the case and connect it directly inside a desktop computer; it may be a standard ATA or SATA drive. If you can do that, transfer all the data to another hard drive (internal or external or network) directly.

You may have partitioned your hard drive. Have a look at your Computer Management Console by right clicking My Computer > Manage. Then under Storage, select Disk Management.

Since this external hard drive is USB powered and felt on the floor, you could have a broken USB connector or interface card, both located inside hard disk case, you should contact Seagate technical support or repair service, or if you have electronics skills, you could open and check hardware by yourself.

My "t " bird hard drive fell onto floor from about

The '1TB' device is 10 to a large power.
The '930GB' is 2 to a much-larger power.

Since '1GB' is 1,073,741,824 bytes,
multiplying 930 times 1,073,741,824 is equal to 1TB.

So, your device is 100% empty -- all 930GB are "free" space.

HELP MY HARD DRIVE HAS GONE!

Ok to understand this , you dropped a 1 TB hard-drive external hard drive on the floor? Well considering that it is a external, the cases in most externals are meant to take a beating as well as the hard-drive it self. There is two possiblities I can think of, what could of happened. When the Hard-Drive hit the floor, it could of is disconnected the connection on the hard-drive itself inside the casing, which you will have to pop it open and reseat it. Or the hardrive, arm inside the hard-drive it self snapped or is misplaced, which is unrepairable. Open up the casing and looking for the hardrive it self. Towards the back of the hard-drive is where the connection of th drive is, it is eather sata or orginal set up with his pins based. Take the connection off and put it back on and see if that works, if it didnt, best advise would be is take in in and have the drive tested, see if its still operable.

The drive letter and USB port are not inherently tied together. you can give it a drive letter as long as nothing else is going to use that letter inherently, and be fine. Did giving it "F" work?

Lacie ext HD 500gb turns on but doesnt read

If the spinning sound is not clean anymore there is damage to the hard drive and I doubt it will be easy to get the data out. If the drive still shows up in the disk management you can try to access it with a tool like ddrescue and then run photorec on the created image. If you want somebody else to do it for you there is Data Recovery NYC. Also there is good informaation on hard drive repairs on hddguru.com.

Lacie hd problem

This is a pretty old thread, but I just figured out the work-around for my Lacie drive with the same symptoms. I took the Lacie case apart to find a pretty standard 3.5" Seagate Barracuda drive inside the case. If you pull the actual hard drive out of the box, you can either purchase a new external hard drive adapter box ($30-80) or install it into a tower computer. I installed it into an older G3 tower and it mounted right up. I decided it wasn't worth investing in a six year old hard drive, so I will be purchasing a new drive and pulling the data off the old one.
