Question about Western Digital My Book Essential Edition (WDG1U5000N) 500 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

WD 1T External Drive

My cat ran by and knocked my external drive on the floor. I am hoping it is only the power cord. I try to plug it in and the light quickly flashes on and then off. It is acting like there is a short in the wire. Can this be the problem or might it be something bigger? My entire 4800+ song iTunes is on this drive. Please help me!!

It is possible that the issue is just with the enclosure. If you feel comfortable enough, you can remove the drive from the enclosure and connect it to the inside of the computer and see if the drive is still functioning.

However, I would guess it is probably not a very high chance of the drive being good...

hello

do this and it should work : unplug the power and USB cords from the external WD drive

wait 20 seconds. plug the power cord into the drive (make sure the other end is plugged into the wall)
wait 20 seconds, plug the one end of the USB into the computer, and the other end into the WD external drive.

in a few seconds, your computer should see and activate the WD external drive.

thanks for using FIXYA -- please make sure to send me 4 thumbs up

I dropped my WD Passport on the floor and it got disconnected from the usb cord drive cable, when I plugged it all back in and plugged it on my pc it doesn't shop up anymore, how do I fix it?

Sadly you don't.
Dropping a hard drive and having it still work is something you should never expect.
You could pry the case open and put the drive it in an empty external drive case and see if it works, or try a new cable, but the most delicate part is the drive mechanism itself, and if anythings broken, that is most probably it.
You could probably get a replacement, maybe not WD, for around $60 and one I got on special $70 including postage from an online seller a few weeks ago had a 500GB WD drive in it.

WD Eliments 1T external HD. hidden data

hi there could be a couple of things you can try, you could, ( if you have xp ) have the drive in, then go to my computer, then tools, then folder options, click, view, then look down the list for show hidden files and folders, that's one, the other is to take the drive caddy apart, remove the hard drive ( as they are just normal hdd's in external boxes ) connect it up to a spare port on your desktop computer and see if you can transfer files that way, ( note! this will void the warranty on the drive case if you do this if it is still under warranty ) the other way would be to get a data recovery program, like winundelete, which you should be able to find on either your computer or the net for free, hope this will help

If you look at the Power supply box there should be a green light. If you unplug the cord and plug it in again it might just blink then stay our.. it is a common problem with these WD Elements. If it is newer, then it is under warranty.
