Dell 610 here stuck on boot up screen with green vertical lines

Unable to boot up in safe mode, I can see the Dell boot up screen flicker sporadically behind a ton of vertical green lines. I connected to an external monitor and it won't even connect to show on the monitor. Please help, is it a video card? Thanks!!!

Thanks, I should have also added that it has been running really hot lately, possibly overheating? I will check the ribbon thanks again.

If it is unable to boot up, its probably not a monitor issue, although it could well be without examing it. If your good with computers, you can take it apart and look to see if the lcd ribbon cable is torn or damaged. If you don't feel you can do it, contact dell support or take it to your local computer repair shop. I hope this helps!

Unplug the monitor video cable from the computer. Power on the monitor and see if you get the same results. If so then your monitor is defective.

Booting from the Dell CD that came with my laptop. No good, I never get to the menu. My computer starts booting from the CD, I get the screen where it says 'Windows is loading files' and the white bar....

press F12 at boot time and select to boot the Diagnostics, in there let it run through the diagnostics and see if you get any error codes.

If this is clean then try booting windows into safe mode by pressing F8 as the computer boots up, then select to boot into Safe mode with command prompt and at the command prompt type chkdsk /r let it finish and try booting your system again.

also make sure you are booting the CD by pressing the F12 key at bootup and select the CD/DVD drive as the boot source. You may be inserting a non bootable CD and it just attempts to load the hard disk after. You can tell if this is happening if the CD light is not flickering but the hard disk light is. hard disk light looks like a cylinder on most laptops.

good luck!

I have yellow vertical lines on my screen and when I try to update my video drivers the computer shuts off?

could be a bad video card. you could try resetting to default vga mode in windows.
just before booting into windows press F8 a couple times to go into safe mode.
when the safe mode list comes up, select VGA mode.
if you still have the lines, it probably a bad card or bad chip if it's built in.
you could add a new graphics card.

Try booting the pc into safe mode with networking. If it will boot to safe mode then all is not lost. If it won't boot to safe mode, try to boot with the windows disc and go to the restore screen or go to the repair option and try to repair the windows startup.

Computer only displays vertical lines and pink background.

Most likely an issue with the Video Card or Video driver.
* Boot to safe mode by tapping F8 while starting up the computer. Selected safe mode with the keyboard and hit enter. Login to your user account. You should see the words “Safe Mode” on all four corners,
* Open device manager – Right click “My Computer” – Select “Manage” – Selected device manager from the left. Under display driver, you should see your vide card listed. Right click on it and select “Disable”.
Now restart your computer and if this resolves the issue, then the vide card may be at fault. You could also try updating the video driver.
Do let me know if you get this far.

Red vertical lines appear, can only run computer in Safe Mode

check the video cable and see if it;s properly seated. run the laptop with something that uses memory. if the video chip it going to show signs of problems, it will be more prominent when the laptop gets hot. most cases laptop motherboards have integrated video cards and cannot be replaced.
