Pressure washer sputters and stalls when trigger is engaged

Have used this pressure washer for years with no problems other than trigger assembly replacement, and have used it well since the replacement in early summer so I don't think it's related.

Emptied the gas can into it a couple of weeks ago, used it a few minutes and it suddenly stopped like it does when the gas runs out. It sat for about a week and I tried again... when I start it up it's fine until I pull the trigger. Works for a few minutes and then starts sputtering; if I release the trigger it runs well, pull the trigger and it sputters, starts to lose power and then dies.

I use it exactly as I always have. I'm wondering if there was some water or junk in the bottom of the gas can?

Info from the machine: Troy-Bilt 2450 PSI, 2.5 GPM, Honda Engine GC 160, 5.0.

I'm a reasonably handy woman but no mechanic... be gentle! Thanks for your help.

Hi k2times01
It is a always a good idea to clean out the gas tank and use new fuel, however, this sounds like an RPM problem. Try adjusting the RPM up a tad and see if it runs better when you load it. If the RPM isn't the problem, you may have to clean the carburetor thoroughly.

SOURCE: troy bilt pressure washer will not build or reach high pressure

check the non-return valves in the pump block. if these are damaged or dirty you pressure will be greatly reduced. they are located behind the 3 lage brass hexagonal caps.

I hope this helps

problem appears to be blockage in the main jet or low fuel flow to the carby
clean out the main jet and bowl ( could be water or dirt in the main jet)
check the fuel flow through the tap as they can corrode inside and block the flow or the filter in the tap inside the tank could be blocked

The trigger on the wand of my Karcher model K 368 M will not re-engage for several minutes after the trigger is released. If I repeatedly squeeze the trigger for a few minutes, eventually the switch will...

it sounds like a flow switch that is installed in the inlet of pump can get stuck at times if you have a soap nozzle select it usually more flow moves the flow switch try and clean the flow switch if possible.

My 1750 psi campbell hausfeld pressure washer will operate at first until I release the trigger on the wand. Then it won't restart. If I wait for a while it will run again. Sounds like the pressure switch.

Common with that washer...it has a wabble pump. Release the trigger, if by pass does not engage, stalls engine. You can however keep using it, all you have to do is keep trigger pressed, and when you are cranking engine, depress trigger with the free hand. Can be repaired, but the fix probably will cost more than a new pump.

Lack of pressure after releasing the trigger on the wand

Hello awcockerill:
This sounds like the bypass (unloader) valve is sticking. Here is a diagram of your machine's pump. On page 2.4 see part #1. The top of this assembly is a black plastic cover. Remove all of assembly # 1 carefully. Under that is part #8. This is the bypass valve. You need to pull this out, check that the o-rings are not bent, worn or damaged, then lube it good with a VERY VERY good waterproof grease. Re-assemble it and all should be well. The part numbers are on the diagram but where to get them depends on were you live. Karcher web site may give you a number to call. Good luck.

the problem may be the oil. if the oil is fine then try crimping your hose to let less water pressure through. if that still does not work lowes or home depot will fix the problem cheap. thank you for using fixya

Pressure washer stalls out when wand nozzle is released

common for not starting unless trigger engaged as you are turning the pump as well as engine creating pressure,as for stalling pump has unloader valve which is probably in need of grease(use good silicone grease)this allows water to ciculate when trigger released.

Sounds like the unloader is not working. try replacing it and see if that helps.
