Question about General Electric Microwave Oven
Microwave GE Model #JE1640WB - No heating, Buring smell when kept on for 15-20 sec and makes noise when powered on.
Built May 2000.
Magnetron is done. This part heats the food. GE microwaves tend to have them stop working quite frequently. They basically make up the majority of the cost of the microwave, so instead of replacing the magnetron, you would be better off getting a new microwave.

I am not sure if I would agree with "dixit_jayant" on this one.
We got the GE JE1640WB as well and ours is built into the cabinets, comes with frames, face, everything. I just looked up the Magnetron for that unit on RepairClinic.com. It costs $122.30. New Microwave ovens from GE - the cheaper ones - cost around $270.00 and up. Then, you have no frame and nothing to fit in the cabinets. On new models, even the wood facing would have to be changed around a bit on the cabinet. Labor!
Personally, I think replacing the Magnetron is a great idea if you can do it yourself.
