Possible failure of the main program controller unit as it fails to contact at times and resets .
Since you mentioned that it is erratic the program is not executed to contact to the job of the cycle and so the drain pump/valve is stopped mid way.
Erratic behaviour in wash programmes can often be due to clogging of the path between the tub and the pressure sensor which senses the water level in the tub. Clogging can result in water level being incorrectly detected (may read as too high or too low) for the stage of programme that is executing, which can result in a halt of the programme.
We had the same problem. We unblocked the filter (found a hair grip, a belt buckle and a sock) and with luck it will be fine now. To unblock the filter pull down the little white round flap on the front of the machine and unscrew the filter. Beware though water may pour out when you unscrew the filter.
