Epson Photo RX700 Error: Interface Not Connected

I used this all-in-one Epson for a couple of years with my old HP laptop and recently got a new HP laptop. I've been printing fine for a couple of weeks. Today I tried to scan and the machine doesn't react at all.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the software from the CD several times, unplugged, plugged in, rebooted several times, still with the same results. The Epson is plugged directly into the laptop via USB - not through a hub or anything. It prints, copies, everything but scans.

When I click on Scanner Settings, it says Interface Not Connected.

I downloaded new drivers from the Epson site.

I still get the same result from clicking Scan icon: Epson Scan cannot be started. Pressing the scan to PC button on the Epson yields no reaction.

What can I try next? I'm puzzled because it worked fine with the other laptop. Both use Windows XP operating system.

Thanks!
Stefani

I have downloaded & set up every Driver & Download available at the link you provided, that was available for Windows XP operating system. Still no change.

I followed the Epson troubleshooting guide but stop when I get to the part about making sure the scan button is connected to the scan application because I don't see these same options in the scanner window after setting it to Scan to Email.

I saw something about making sure the user Administrator is set up properly but I don't how to do that. Might that be something?

    Thanks!

When I read your solution about installing the software not from the CD but downloading it from epson.com I was 100% sure you had given me the solution. Nada.

I uninstalled every bit of Epson software, removed the CD and downloaded every piece of software available for Windows XP for the Epson Stylus Photo RX700. Same result - Scanner is not ready. Interface: Not Connected. Option: Unknown.

I unzip the files and "run" and each one says the installation was successful. These are the programs I downloaded: 11887, 12688, 11667, 11566, 11562.

What am I missing? What's next?

    Thanks!

Yep, copy action works fine. I just made another copy to verify positively - works fine. Prints and copies perfectly.

Thanks - I appreciate your time on this! I'm looking forward to the next suggestion.

Yay! The Epson installed properly on another laptop and I was able to scan. Whew!

So how do I reinstall the operating system? Can a mere mortal do that? (I'm moderately computer literate/comfortable.)

    Thanks!

I didn't get to this until today. The back-up part went smoothly - I saved it to my external hard drive.

I followed your instructions and it was going fine until it got to the Installing Windows step. I got this error message:

Setup cannot copy the file migregdb.ex_.

It said to make sure the Windows Operating CD Service Pack 2 CD was in the drive, which it is. So it's looking here: E:\i386. I had to pick the ignore option, then it couldn't find another file, which I didn't write down. I picked ignore again - and now it looks like it has continued (chasing dots in lower right hand corner are moving and the features paragraphs keep changing). But it says the installation should take 27 minutes and it's been a couple of hours.

    Now what?

    Thanks!

    Thanks for your quick answer.

The laptop is brand new, never been repaired or altered. It's an HP ProBook 4510s. I've been using it for about a month.

I work for a computer company (reseller) so I think, at this point, I'll take the laptop into work tomorrow and have one of our IT people look at it for me. It's one of the perks of working there - and it feels like I could be getting in over my head now.

Thanks so much for your help. I appreciate your diligence & responsiveness in trying to help me solve this problem.

    Hi Tim -

The OS CD looks flawless to me.

I did try the OS repair a second time yesterday with the same result at the same place.

We ruled out the Epson being the problem because I was able to hook it up to another laptop, install the software and use all the functions. In fact, I'm now using my old laptop, hooked up to the Epson, and am able to use all the functions, like I've always been able to with that.

With the new laptop (been using it about 2-3 weeks), I was able to print, but not scan.

    Thanks for your help.

HI,

The problem is with the software. You will have to reinstall it properly.First uninstall the software,Disconnect the printer from your laptop and this time do not use your CD to install the software.Download and install the software from the below link:

http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.jsp?oid=58608&prodoid=53540921&BV_UseBVCookie=yes&infoType=Downloads&platform=Windows&x=26&y=15

Make sure you download and install all the software's mentioned for Windows XP.
If you have a 64 bit XP then download and install all softwares mentioned for Win XP (64 bit)

Also make sure you first install all the software and only then connect the USB cable.

This will fix the issue.

If you need any more help let me know

Thank you.

Hello. If it is an OS reinstallation you are looking for and if your laptop has never had an OS reinstall before then you have a seperate partition to take the settings back to the factory defaults.

Press Ctrl+F11 or F11 alone when you turn on your laptop. This will bring up the PC restore/ System restore. This will take the system to its factory settings. Nut make sure you have all the data backed up. If this does not work kindly comment I shall provide you with the steps to reinstall OS using a CD.

The operating system CD is the Windows CD, ignore the part where the other guy talks about software for marking and repairing bad sectors, that is not what you are experiencing. You will probably want to cancel out of the install and start it again. Also, double check your windows cd is not badly scratched, this can cause the missing files. If it does not look badly scratched and you get the error on the second time you install then you are experiencing hardware problems such as ram failure or a processor failing. I am looking more into the history of your problem, but I am a bit perplexed here, it looked like the Epson was failing, what led to you wanting to reinstall the operating system?

Looking into your problem, maybe there answer is there, please let me know though and we can get this fixed.

Before directly concluding the software failure I'd like to see wether the hardware i.e. your scanner works fine or not. In order to do that you simply make a copy of any document. If it is scanning and printing the document ok, then your scanner is working fine. The problem remains with your software side. But before troubleshooting from the SW side kindly let me know that your your copy action worked fine.

I require you to do one more HW test with your printer i.e. take it to another pc connect it install its normal drivers via CD and try to scan if this is successful then certainly you need to repair your OS on your laptop.

Its not a big deal in repairing/reinstalling your operating system you are required to keep few things in mind before re-installing/repairing.

    1. Repair option is better you need not to re-install other drivers while using this option.
    2. But then also I'd suggest you to keep your drivers as backup all the time.
    3. Goto start button help and support in the small text box in help and support type ASR. It will guide you how to take your pc's backup just read it and take the back-up.
    4. Don't forget to remove whatever drivers you have installed for your epson.
    5. Put your OS CD inside the CD tray and restart your laptop.
    6. Boot your PC through CD. If it is not giving you the option to boot through CD then while startup simply press Del key and wait for the BIOS settings to popup. Once the BIOS comes go to the Advance chipset settings and select first boot device as CD Second as HDD-0. If it boots through CD then let it do whatever it is doing until it asks for repair option for the first time. Don't press 'R' at this point simply press enter. Within seconds it will ask to press R or enter this time you are required and press 'R' and simply follow whatever it is asking you to do. It's easy like installing your epson driver.

This will deffinetly take you out of your scanning trouble.

If at this juncture also your scanner does not works you require to connect it to diff USB and re-install your USB driver. But I hope it will work for you on the repair itself, anyhow if it doesn't just ask me for your USB drivers update.

Fine, now your problem is clearly understood. The problem is not with the scanner or your driver. The problem is with your laptop. One of the two things are faulty. Either RAM or your HDD. I can let go RAM cause your PCs other functions are working smooth nicely. But I can pin-point your C:(or root) HDD It is having bad sector which has not been marked as bad sector. Stefani, either you or your circumstances are using my brain too fine. Anyways thats my job. Now I will require your laptop's details Just gimme make and model. and also if you ever sent it for repairs or any alterations done with it. I'm always at your service.

And I can understand your present situation also since you are in the middle of repair. There is one more prob which is most common The OS CD you are using is corrupt. Just take out the OS CD re-insert the CD tray push the power button on your laptop for 5 secs let it shut down and get a good CD of your OS which is not corrupt. And then follow the same proceedure for repair nothing would get harmed.

Hey Steffani It seems I did something wrong somewhere. Anyways I never thaught for that. I told you frankly that the problem which you projected is not the actual problem. The real problem is your laptop and to pinpoint the problem in layman's language is bad sector on the Root of your Hard Disk. And the reason behind is when your scanner tries to create $something$ temp file on the root of your Hard Disc it falls on bad sector. Hence, it does not works for you on this laptop. Its not a long job to troubleshoot this problem. Just a good Operating System CD and a third party software for marking bad sectors or correcting them. Alongwith one hour of patience.

    Thanks,
    Mahendra.
