Hi, I just got a vintage astatic jt 30 mic off ebay --bought it 'as is' and it's indeed dead...can I have a new element put in easily enough, assuming that's the problem?...I did tinker with it: after just reading online that using a speaker from an old rotary phone creates an agreably gritty sound, I attached the wires to an old rotary phone speaker...Lo and behold, I'm getting some promising static, but no real sound. Any advice, please?

try a stock mike or a noise canceling one. Hard to run power on top of power. And see what your radio is dead keying into the radio...usally with a 500 it can take up to a 6 watt dead key.
That is a HIGH VALUE antique mic. It is a CRYSTAL type microphone and as such is a HIGH IMPEDANCE type requiring a preamp with high inout impedance. You will get nothing if you run it into inouts intended for a dynamic mic.
Do not damage it as it has antique value around $200
Offhand, the 4 pin mic connector and corresponding pin # would depend on the communications equipment the Astatic was initially wired for. However, the color coding of the wires in an Astatic would be:
white - mic audio;
shield/blue - gnd;
black - NC or speaker;
red - NO or PTT;
yellow - not normally used.
Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.
