You don't provide much info but I'm assuming you have installed the camera software on the computer, have attached the USB lead from the camera to the computer, made sure that the memory card is in the camera and THEN switched the camera on? If yes, then try checking for updates to the drivers/software from Canon's website for your model camera.

By the way the easiest and quickest way is to buy a usb multi card reader. Plug in the flash card to the unit and connect it to a usb port on the computer. Then open the location in "My Computer" and copy all images to "My Pictures*

SOURCE: downloading photos from Canon 400D direct to Canons photo editing programmes on new windows Vista computer.

There are two ways to solve this problem. I am assuming you are simply clicking on the pictures and choosing "edit" or double clicking on the pictures and they are opening in "Vista picture editing"
The first way to overcome this is by opening the desired program first (in this case canon's photo editor) and then choose open and find the desired photos.
The other way is to set the file type association in vista so that RAW programs open with the canon program see below for step by step:
1. Click Start
2. Click default programs on the black bar
3. Click Associate a file type or protocol with a program
4. Find the file types you want to open automatically in your canon editing program (RAW .jpg etc)
5. Click once at the top of the page click change program
6. A new window will open, if it does not list the correct program click browse at the bottom of the window and find your editor in it's folder.
7. Select the desired program by double clicking
8. Click OK
9. Click close
10. Test the new file association by double clicking a RAW file or one of the other file types and see if it loads into the correct program.

The final (and this is simply my plug for open source programs) solution would be to try something like GIMP (it is a photo editing suite developed under linux but adapted for windows) you can search for it on google.

If you are having trouble with any of these steps please post a comment and I will try and add some clarification.
Hope this helps

I have windows 7 and canon power shot a640 How do I download pictures to computer

Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer.
The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.
Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo management program such as Picasa ( http://picasa.google.com ).

If you REALLY want the Canon stuff you may get some (though not all) of it from here.

When retrieving photos, error message "cannot detect camera"-can't move photos from camera to computer.

why not remove the card and use a card reader? Simpler and not dependant on the battery or power-supply of the camera...

How do I download pictures from my powershot a640 to my computer?

Please see the following blog article, as it describes the use of a card reader as a much easier, faster, and less error prone way to download your photos. In fact there are several important reasons discussed in the article for using a card reader vice downloading from the camera. USB Card readers are also very inexpensive these day, with cost virtually not an issue:

Canon A640 flash problem

I sent my camera into Canon for repair. They said the flash was malfunctioning, and there was something wrong with the flash exposure control. The repair cost about $87. It took approximately 10 days from the time I sent the camera in until the time I got it back.

Videos and photos not all readable by computer when taken on Canon PowerShot A640

You will likely need to use the software that came with the Canon powershot vs. just trying to download via the default (scanner and camera wizard for example) program. If you are doing this already, then I don't know why it is not transferring them over to the computer properly, but if you are not using the Canon Zoombrowser software, you should make sure you load the cd that came with it.

Hope this helps!
