Dell Inspiron 1545 hinges

You will need to get them fixed or replaced before they cause further problems. Typically when the hinges are loose or damaged, opening and closing the lid will cause it to crack and detatch the securing points moulded into the plastic case.

1 Answer

Is this a common problem , 1 The plastic frame around my screen has a slight hairline crack FROM the bottom left corner of the screen going out . 2 Is this a concern for the laptop .

That crack means you have a problem in the HiNGE part.
You have to bring that laptap to a tech and have them replace/repair/lubricate both hinges before it breaks the whole LCD screen support and damages the wiring leading to the LCD.
Gently close the LCD part when closing!

Hope that helps!

Mu laptop hinges are broken. I wanted to know what problems this may cause? Sometimes when I tipe words, it doesn't work in the screen. This could be related with the broken hinges?

Laptop hinges are generally made of low-cost metal alloys, or "pot metal yeah this may cause problem you can fix your broken hinges easily by spending little time ." Pot metal is not particularly durable, and over the course of a laptop's life cycle, repeated opening and closing of the computer's lid can cause wear that prevents the lid from staying in an open position. Hinges can also wear to the point that they break at the point of attachment, either on the lid or the computer's body.

Hinges are usually attached to the computer's frame via machine screws. In order to get the most life out of your computer's hinges, it is not a bad idea to perform a yearly inspection. Remove the hinge covers and check that the machine screws that secure the hinges are tightened fully. If screws are missing, contact the computer's manufacturer to order replacement screws; hinges missing screws are subjected to additional stress and can wear out faster if steps are not taken to replace the screw.
Lubrication of the hinge is possible, but not recommended; if the wrong type of lubricant is used, it could damage the computer's case or seep into the electrical components and further damage the computer. Consult a professional technician if you feel that your hinges require lubrication.

o Hinges can also be damaged when the computer is picked up by its lid, dropped from various heights or opened beyond the angle at which it should stop. In these situations, damage to the hinges may be of secondary concern, as component damage and data loss might have occurred. Depending on the amount of damage and warranty status, the computer may require complete replacement.

Laptop hinges are not indestructible, but their coverings and trim may show wear long before the hinges are actually in any danger of failure. Most laptops on the market include plastic hinge covers. The hinge covers can develop stress fractures from repeated wear; most of the time, this is not indicative of a hinge problem.
Some laptop hinges are housed within the bezel or trim of the computer's monitor or body. This, too, is generally made of plastic, and might develop stress cracks after a few years of use. Hinge covers and bezels are usually modular, and replacements are generally easy to find at low to moderate costs.

o Hinge problems can be mitigated with adjustments to the hinge's tension or additional hardware installation by the user. Brackets can be installed on the outer case to allow for hinge-like performance, or the screen can be mounted in a fixed position. If the screen is left permanently open, care should be taken to prevent damage to the screen and to prevent dust accumulation in the keyboard.
The lid and screen assembly can also be replaced, if the correct parts can be found. Replacement of the lid and screen can be cost-prohibitive, with parts and labor sometimes exceeding the cost of the computer.

I have 2 HP dv8000's that have multiple problems. The caps key does lock up - I saw the fix on here - but having to hit the keys repeatedly for them to go back to functioning correctly is ridiculous. My...

I had a DV9207US, so I know how you feel.

Caps lock - No other way around this then repeatedly hitting the key.
Hard drive - Hard drive does not play cd/dvds
DVD drive - On HP DV series, is super sensitive and does open quite frequently.
Keys rubbing off - No other way around this. You could replace the keyboard with one from HP Spare Parts. Quite easy to do on the DV series.
Battery life - Is horrible and HP has had several class action lawsuits because of it. I never used my laptop portably. I took the battery out and chucked it. I was as mobile as only being able to plug in my laptop let me.
Hinges - DV series have a lock on one hinge that you can choose to turn in order to lock your screen. Unfortunately, they were built poorly and cheaply and cause the hinge to go out.

If you're experiencing both hinges cracking, I'm afraid you're suffering from the other big HP malady: Overheating. HP design had serious flaws and combined with virtually non-existent heatsinks, many DV series laptops would overheat and then vent right where your screen meets the top edge of your laptop. This excessive heat causes the plastic to warp exposing the hinges as well as wreaking havoc on the bottom portion of the lcd screen.

HP is currently facing class action lawsuits for this.

If your screen is cracking (which is what mine did) you only have a little while longer before the screen completely falls off. The entire plastic portion around the screen will come out and/or the flimsy cable (which oddly enough HP put right inside the crappy hinge lock) will rip, break or tear causing the monitor to go out completely. There is, sadly no way around this (unless you're really good mechanically, there are several websites dedicated to fixing laptop hinges, google it). At this point, you could just attach it to a docking system and connect it to an old monitor and just use it that way or you could replace your screen, open up the laptop and use better heatsinks, but for that price, you could just buy another laptop, which is what I did.

Good luck.

Ds lite comes on the top screen flashes then it switches off

It could also be a bad top screen due to a bad ribbon cable. If your hinge is cracked it could cause damage to the ribbon cable that passes through it, this shorts out the top screen and will shut the DS down

Nintendo ds lite one of the hinges is broken and cracked just along a bit. It happened yesterday thought it would be fine but every time I close it it turns off. It was never dropped so I don't know how it...

It could be shutting off for a number of reasons...

The most likely is that when it received the damage to the hinge it has also damaged the top screens ribbon and so when it is closed the ribbon loses its connection and this shuts it down.

If you wnted to check the ribbon you can dismantle the DS (unless you have a warranty in which case just send it off for repair) and check the ribbon for any damage.

Here is a dismantling guide i have written to help you take it apart... When you free up te top screens ribbon inspect it carefully, ideally with a magnifying glass to be thorough... if there is any damage to the ribbon then your best bet is to replace the screen (a new one can be bought from ebay for a very reasonable price). and fit it to resolve the issue.

Top screen replacement guide

Hope this helps, if you hve any further problems, questions or issues please feel free to contact me via my profile page.

Whenever I close my DS without turning it off,it doesn't go to sleep, the screen flickers and the sound gets all choppy. when I reopen it,it's just fine. also, the part that holds the top screen up is...

The problem will stem from the cracked right hand hinge and the ribbon and wire that connects to the top screen may have some damage that will be causing the other issue's. The console will require a complete new housing or you may be able to pick up a second hand part from console repair shop, they may have a top section spare that will save on a full housing repair. That will solve the hinge, but a top screen may be also required!!
