Question about Canon IXY 1000 Digital Camera

1 Answer

I hit the on/off button on my Canon IXY Digital 10 (7.1 m-pixel), and it will not turn on - I get black screen and message:'Lens error, restart camera'. It was working fine before, but has now not worked for over a month. It was not dropped or otherwise obviously damaged. Please help! Tim, Reading

I have an IXY 110. how do i restart the camera?

I'm guessing that you're asking because your receiving a "lens error, restart camera" message. Unfortunately, restarting the camera (turning it off and back on again) rarely corrects the problem. Many cameras that fall prey to lens error problems can only be corrected by professional repair. But, here are some last resort troubleshooting steps that you can try that may correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty (or repair cost approaches that of the camera), they're worth that try.

LENS ERROR, RESTART CAMERA...

CANON IXUS 561
Lens sometimes does not extend and error message 'lens error restart camera' appears when camera is turned on. This does not work without several tries and much button pressing. Problem is not caused by finger(s) in front of lens barrel.

Canon IXUS 100IS - 'Lens error, restart camera' message

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ... Lens error restart camera

This is probably THE most common failure among digital cameras. There's a halfway chance of fixing it yourself, described here: http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/fixing-lens-error-on-digital-camera.html

Find a few Canon repair shops, and describe them your problem, and they should be able to give you rough estimates. I've had estimates for same mechanical problem from $200 to $15.

If you are adventurous (and the manufacturer's warranty is expired), remove all the tiny screws, and see if this is something simple, and you can tell repairman what specific part you need - their estimate will be more accurate that way.
