I believe you have some MALWARE installed in your syst. Unplug your unit for 2 min. or so and reboot into safe mode, in this state you may be able to burn your files unto a CD or transfer to USB drive, after that, reboot with your syst disk and perform a destructive restore. You should purchase and use anti-viral software like WebRoot. I hope this helps.

Files from a back up

You should be able to plug the external hard drive into the new computer and restore. Generally the drivers needed to access the external driver are on the external drive itself. The operating system will detect the hard drive (if it has plug-and-play services running). If the new computer fails to see the external drive, check the cable and download the driver manually from the manufacture's website. If the drive is recognized by the operating system, but you do not see a prompt to restore from the backup, you may need to locate a setup program on the external hard drive to start the restore process.

Can i transfer information to a mac

If the external hard drive has been formatted on a PC in NTFS file format then the MAC cannot read data off this hard drive.
The FIX..
Connect the USB external hard drive to a Windows computer and copy your data off this hard drive to the computer.
Then format the external hard drive in FAT32 file format. (the MAC can read and write to data to and from a Windows PC)
Now copy the your data from the computer back onto the external hard drive.
Now you can connect the external hard drive to the MAC and download your data to the MAC.

Connect the external drive to a different computer, and "browse" the contents of the drive -- if the disk can be read, then the files can be copied, and maybe burned to "blank" writable CD/DVD disks.

Simpletech External Hard Drive 500GB

As far as your computer. You should be able to get the data off it. Assuming the hard drive is okay. But as far as your external.. I'm not sure . Depends on what you mean crashed. Even if, lets say, you can't use it b/c it keeps crashing in windows. Doesn't mean that you couldn't get stuff off it. So you should be able to get your data off. "should". After that you should run checkdisk /f and have it scan those drives. If they have bad sectors it will mark them and tell the computer not to put data there. Then they should be okay to use.

Computer wont start-up

Hi,
If I get you right, after you plug the xternal drive to transfer some file, the system didn't come up. Right?
Well, let me assume yes. If that is the case, I will advise you to boot the system from an external disk and use it to scan the local hard disk for virus. After that, remove the x-hard disk and try to boot the system. If it doesn't work, then transfer all the files to the xternal hard disk and format the local hard disk for new use. Best of luck.
