The exit rollers need to be cleaned, but whats happening is ink is coming from the bottom onto the rollers. It needs to come apart and be cleaned and a mylar strip put in to keep the ink from coming up. A shop repair usually.

Ink leak?

It's not the cartridges, the waste ink is coming up thru the bottom to the exit rollers. The only fix is to have a shop open it up, clean up the ink mess and install a shield that stops the ink from coming back up when it should go to the absorbers. The new machines all have this shield and the ink tube cut back to make the ink go where it should.

Black Line on back of pages

Your problem is not isolated; I read of two others on this site in mid-August 2008 and added my own post.

I contacted Canon Support and tried their solution (which you've already tried); it did not work. Given the choice of repairing a printer that I've had (and babied) for less than 2 years or buying a new Canon at a discount under their Loyalty Program, I chose to take my MP530 to a Canon Authorized Repair Facility.

According to the repair tech, there is a problem with the waste ink tank and ink absorber pads. The repair facility ordered and installed a rebuild kit; it took about 2 weeks. The printer now works beautifully again.

If your printer is still under warranty, you're in luck. If not, ask that it be handled as a warranty repair. In my opinion, Canon should recalling and offering to fix this problem free of charge.
