Question about Whirlpool Washing Machines

Wash machine missing a cycle?

My wash machine is a Whirlpool 6 cycle wash machine, it fills with water and then when it goes to the cycle where it turns to wash clothes and drains it is stalling and just sitting there so when it gets back to the rinse cycle where it fills with water, it is overflowing. It is spinning well and draining the water well, it just isnt washing the clothes. I called a local repair shop and they want almost 100 dollars just to come look at it. If this is something cheaper to fix I would like to know or if I need to just look for another wash machine.

The wash machine is a older model top loading wash machine. I have checked all the problems listed concerning the transmission and motor, everything seems to be working properly

The drain hose and filter are clogged and need to be cleaned out. A very common problem with washers. You will probably be surprised at what you find. Let me know if it still doesn't work afterwards.

Hi

There are a few possibles causes why this is happening to your machine. You don't give your model number or whether the machine is top or front loading. However here are a few generic issues that may be causing the problem

Drive motor
Many washer brands use a reversing motor. For agitation the motor runs in one direction, for spinning and draining, the other. It's possible for a motor to burn out in one direction and continue to operate in the other. If this happens, you need to replace the entire motor.

Older washers produced by Whirlpool have a transmission with an electro-mechanical shifter. If the shifter becomes even partially defective, the unit may not agitate properly or at all.

The other possibility here is that there is a problem with the control panel itself although this seems unlikely given it is moving through the cycles ok.

There may be a drainage problem also as you mention overfilling and perhaps you might wish to clarify that as later you say it is draining alright.

Hope this helps - feel free to comment with more detail.

As a follow up and something that sticks out a bit given your particular symptoms - plus its a cheap fix if this is what is causing the problem!

    Check your water level switch

An obstruction in this switch will mean that the machine cannot properly sense the water level in the drum causing over fill and preventing the machine from agitating. This is usually a diaphragm device with a small clear tube attached between the switch and the tub. As the water level increases in the tub - air pressure in the tube increases - when the pressure in the tube reaches a certain level it trips the switch - shuts off the water and tells the machine to agitate.

First check the clear tube for any signs of obstruction. If this is not evident turn your attention to the switch itself - check it with a multimeter and you may well have found your fault. If so replace switch (cheap to get replacement) and problem should be resolved.

Hope this helps. Please remember to rate my answer. Many Thanks.

Thank you for providing the extra detail. With a top loading machine that is not agitating but is moving through the cycles as you describe the problem is either

    1) The agitator coupling is destroyed and needs to be replaced

    2) If the motor is a reversing motor it will often spin but not agitate if one of the actions has failed.

Item 1 is usually servicable by the customer - Item 2 is more complicated and will require a technician to check the motor. Hope this clarifies the issue.

    Many Thanks.

I load washer it starts the wash cycle it goes through wash cycle fine drains water but does not collect water for rinse cycle it just idles. So I turn knob to spin and it spins until done.

If it doesn't fill for the rinse, I would say that the cold inlet valve has failed. Check that the cold tap is turned on and check when the machine fills for the wash cycle and see if it is taking hot or cold water. You will probably find that it is filling only with hot water. A local spares store should have the valve you need.

My washing machine fills up with water but does not continue the wash cycle. Sometimes when you slam the lid the washer will continue the wash cycle to the end. Other times the washer stays filled up...

Sounds like the lid safety switch is either out of adjustment, or needs replacement.

Most washers will fill with the lid open, but no continue a cycle where the drum or agitator spin, unless it senses the lid is closed.

Turned on whirlpool duet washer, came back to FH as realized forgot to turn water on. Have tried all the suggestions, but each time I plug the machine it tries to drain water and the motor hums. I cannot...

Make sure both hot and cold water supplies are turned on. Select a cold wash cycle and start the wash cycle, do you get cold water? Now select a hot wash cycle and start the wash cycle, do you get hot water? If you only get cold water replace the hot water fill valve. If you only get hot water replace the cold water fill valve. If you get neither replace both fill valves.

Whirlpool washer won't rinse or spin w/o manually turning knob

It is most likely that you have a faulty water inlet valve. Some machines have a seperate valve for rinse to flush in a fabric softener I suspect that your detergent flushing valve is faulty.....Good luck Nomess

Washing machine wont hold water on any setting

raise the main drain hose to the top of the back control head. there may be a problem with the main hose being to low and the water is gravity siphoning out of the washer.make sure the washer is off when you lift the hose up but do not remove it from the wall, you should here water drain out once it has stopped draining restart you machine and it should fill to the proper level and quit then go into your wash cycle

THE WASHING MACHING FILLS WITH WATER, GOES THROUGH

Most Likely it's the timer. try to move it by hand to the net cycle. If that doesn't work it's the contacts on the inside fouling up.

Whirlpool Washer will not progress to the rince cycle.

that is either a problem with the timer , or with the cold water hose at the back of the machine, see the following:

I quote from : The cycle doesn't advance

The cycle doesn't advanceWhen the cycle doesn't advance, it's probably the timer or a cold-water supply problem:

  • It'sthe timer, if your washing machine fills with water and beginsagitating, but the timer never advances--or if the washer is in a spincycle and the timer won't advance. Then you need to replace the timer.

  • Itmay be a cold-water supply problem, if the washing machine fills withwater, agitates, drains, and spins, but then doesn't fill with rinsewater. See There's no cold water.

Basin will not fill with water during rinse cycle but will agitate and spin.

most new washers have cold water only rinse and spray rinse ck cold water coming into machine during wash if no cold comes in suspect cold side of fill vale not opening ..could be wiring issue or a bad valve
