If the green indicator diode comes on for a second or two, then goes off, then the protection circuit in this PS is being activated.  This PS is a SMPS with two surface mount IC - one is the pulse width modulator and the other I think is a voltage regulator.  The PWM chip will shut down the PS if the temperature rises or it receives a signal from the regulator.  This is what I think happens to cause the PS problem.

The only way to deactivate the shut down, is disconnect the drive, disconnect the mains and turn the mains back on.  However, as soon as you put a load across the PS, the green light will go out and the PS shuts down again.

The most likely cause of this will be one of the four filtering electrolytic capacitors on the output side of the transformer.  They are easy to spot as they are clustered together and are probably dark green.  Look closely at the relief valve stamped in the top of the cap - it this shows signs of bulging, then you have found your problem.  Order the caps of ebay for about a £1.00 and your problem is fixed.

It has been known that fake electrolytic caps have been circulating around for quite some time.  Interestingly, the one that blow on me was also used on motherboards, and this is where the fake caps caused most problems.

Look on eBay Acbel AD6008 or Asian Power Devices DA-30C01 (they are interchangeable assuming you have one or the other). I bought a second and then I learned that the problem was hard drive casing - so you should probably check that before spending money on a new power cord.

In the tech store, like staples, you can have a generic power supply for your device or you can check the specification of the powersupply.

That is what you need. I know it says it is for a LCD monitor, but Western Digital also used these same power adapters for some of their External Hard Drives. You can also check around on Ebay too. Please don't forget to rate! Thanks!

You may have a bad sector(s) on your hard drive. Best bet is to run a low level format on the drive to clean it up and then do the install.

Elements by WD, AC Adapter Failed

There are replacement models for this 5V/1.5A power supply that the AD6008 uses.

One of them is made by a company called "Asian Power Devices" [APD] and their model number for the replacement for this particular unit is: DA-30C01.

I've seen them for sale on www.amazon.com for around $25.00.

Why the eff would I buy a 500 GB and get only 128? if you know it only operates @ 128 smooth why advertise 500? I bought a 500 GB internal to have 500 Gigs. I returned the first one because I thought it...

Your computer may be older that when a 500 gb drive was even thought of, if that is the case you may have to go to the manufacturers support/driver site and download and flash your BIOS to accept the higher GB drives. Most cites have a BIOS updates for their models. Since that information is not included in your explanation, I cannot give you the link, if you want to srite back and include the computer name and model number as well as the operating system, I will try to furnish you with the link for the BIOS update. When you click on the BIOS file make sure the unit has a charged battery and is on AC power.

Replacement power cables

Can find them on eBay, if you can narrow down on the manufacture date. For the model I had, either Acbel AD6008 OR Asian Power Devices (APD) DA-30C01 work. I ordered a replacement which worked - but my real problem was needing a new hard drive casing. So now I have 2 power cords I don't need...but at least I have my data.

POwer supply failure

Hi John,

Had the same problem with a WD Elements 320 GB drive, and found a WD customer service number. They are sending me a FREE replacement. I have put the details on a message somewhere on this site, but can't direct you to it.

The number from Australia is : 1800 429 861 ( routed to Singapore )

Email Address : Western Digital Customer Service . CustomerService@wdc.com

Send them details of your mailing address, drive model and serial number, and a description of your power supply. ( my power supply had a model number moulded on the back )

Hope this helps

Help! the green light flashes then nothing happens

The exact same thing just happened to me (WD elements 500 gig) and it's only about 10 months old. I called the customer help line (on the official website) and after they asked me what the serial number of my HD was they were going to send me a new power supply. Simple as that. They said they'd be able to send it out early next week. I'm hoping that the HD didn't get fried and it's just the power supply but what you've described is EXACTLY what is happening to mine.

Sata hard drive

Check to see if your motherboard has a sata controller on it. The user manual will tell you. You can get a new on on asus.com. If it does support it, you will need sata drivers for it which you can download from the website as well.

If it doesn't work you can add one external by picking up and external drive case for sata controllers. Then all you need is a spare USB 2.0 port. Make sure you get one with a power supply for it because at that size getting 500 gig to work will require extra power to perform properly.
