Bravo! You hit the nail right on the head. If your washer fills and doesn't do anything, or stops right after the wash cycle and then does not advance to the rinse cycle or drain, the problem is commonly caused by a lid switch malfunction. The lid switch is usually mounted under the washer top casing, on the right hand side on most top load models. It is activated by a plastic piece on the lid (called a "Lid Strike") through a small hole on the rim of the wash tub opening. In many cases the lid strike breaks off the lid, or the lid switch becomes loose and no longer makes contact. Inspect the lid to make sure the lid strike is still intact, and then inspect the mounting screws (adjacent to the small opening on the wash tub rim) and make sure they are snug. If you determine the switch to be defective, the following link explains how to replace one:

If the switch requires replacement, a new one can be purchased on line at searspartsdirect.com, pcappliancerepair.com, repairclinic.com, appliancepartspros.com. Just use your model number as your search criteria. All these sites offer competitive pricing, so shop all them for the best price.

If you have questions, or my advice does not match your symptoms, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

My washer is not draining water.- no motor running or any sound. Agitates fine but when it comes time to drain- nothing. Please help

The agitator, water pump, and spin cycle run off of the same motor. There are a number of possibilities why it doesn't go into the spin cycle from a fault in the timer, a faulty lid safety switch, a faulty transmission, or a broken drive belt. If you are comfortable with a DYI, get out your multimeter and start testing the timer and lid switch. If they check out OK, then take off the back panel and check the belt and transmission. If you are not comfortable with tracking down the problem, call an appliance repairman or if the washer is over 10 years old consider buying a replacement.

Tip

The washing machine wont agitate?

There are many possibilities for this problem. you will have to check all of them one by one mentioned as follows :--- There is a lid switch in the washer. The washing machine will not start spinning till the lid is closed. In some cases it has been seen that lid is closed still the washer does not agitating. in this cases the lid switch has to be checked. if the lid switch is faulty then the closed lid will not be detected by the washing machine, and it will not start agitate cycle.
But if the lid switch is ok checked, then other possibility can be fault in the motor coupler. Many a times the motor coupler is broken .The motor coupler is plastic/rubber kind of material fitted on the shaft of the motor .Check properly if the motor coupler seems cracked, worn out loose or broken then it needs to be replaced to solve the issue. But if motor coupler is checked ok then other possibility for this problem is the spinning belt. If the belt is worn out or loose or cracked/broken then it needs to replace.
Only for GE washers. In GE model washers, there is a clutch used for proper spin speed. If the clutch wears out, it has to be replaced. But if clutch/belt seems ok. then other possibility is driver motor itself .check if the motor has power if not then the motor is got internally burnt .in this case the drive motor needs to be replaced. but if drive motor is functioning properly then other possibility to be checked for this fault is the transmission shifter and pulley. If the transmission shifter becomes defective, the unit may drain the water but not spin. Replacing the shifter is bit time consuming and tough job. you will require proper tools to deal with this problem.. But if the transmission shifter is properly working then other possibility to check is the Agitator itself. If the transmission is moving properly but the Agitator is getting stuck and not moving properly then its the fault in the agitator assembly that has to be replaced to solve the problem. This will help.Thanks.

while the machine is empty and in the spin cycle open the lid and hold down the lid switch spin the basket with your hand if it spins slowly you probably have a worn out clutch.

I have a Kenmore washer model 110.26832690 that will not spin. It will fill up, agitate, but on spin cycle it will only drain. Does this sound like a bad lid switch or a bad drive adapter? From what I've...

if it agitates correctly, then its likely your lid safety switch, agitate and spin cycles are reversed by the motor during the cycles of agitate and spin, some units are wired to not operate on either agitate or spin, but some will operate on agitate with the lid open, but not on spin, open control panel and bypass the lid switch and this will tell you before you tear out the direct drive pump, motor and get to the d.d. coupler at the transmission

Whirlpool model # LLR6144BQ1 water fills but will not go to wash cycle.

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.
This is usually caused by a failed lid switch that is item 9 this link:
http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=256996

First off put the washer in the spin cycle. With the lid closed see if the washer will spin. No spin also = bad lid switch. If the washer spins but will not agitate then the problem is most likely the water level pressure switch or associated air tubing. (any air leaks and it will not stop filling)
Water level switch is item 12 here:
http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=256996&diagram_id=28209075#d28209075
We test these with NO WATER in the machine and after connecting an external hose with the lid closed with power on by orally passing air into the small air hose we connected. It will click and the washer must agitate. If it clicks and does not agitate... again it points to the lid switch. Disconnecting this water level switch hose with ater in the maching and then re-connecting the hose WILL result in the machine overflowing. Tub MUST be empty.

You check the lid switch as you just open or close the lid. You should hear an audible CLICK as the lid is barely off of its closed position and again as the lid is almost closed. NO CLICK = bad door switch.

These are the 2 most common reasons that will correct the symptom your experiencing more than 90 percent of the time. There is a remote possibility that there is a problem with the motor / motor clutch. Motor clutch problems are noted by odd noises when motor is running and it will not spin or agitate. If the motor will spin the machine but will not agitate the machine it can be a motor winding.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

Agitator doesn't spin during wash cycle

If The washer won't agitate
Check to make sure no clothing got wrapped around the agitator. Check the lid switch, timer, and drive belt, other potential causes, such as a bad transmission or bad agitate/spin solenoid, but they are much more involved.
if the washer won't spin, the lid switch, timer, drive belt, transmission, or agitate/spin solenoid could be the cause here as well. Sometimes if the load is unbalanced or too heavy, the washer won't spin. Take some of the clothes out and try the spin cycle again with a lighter load.

Here are the steps to replace the agitator.
1: Take the fabric softener dispenser off and pry off the agitator lid.
2: Use a socket wrench with an extension bar to remove the stud and seal.
3: Remove the agitator top and bottom.
4: Check the agitator clutch assembly (located in the agitator top) for excessive wear.
5: To replace, just reverse the directions.

90 Series Kenmore Washer Not going to spin cycle not draining water

I've had the same problem...you can purchase a replacement lid switch at your local appliance parts store for about $35. Fortunatly, the sales person at the appliance store had diagrams and provided instructions to replace the switch. I was able to finish the job and fix the switch in less than 1 hour. Good Luck.
