Re: Tab on left side of toner keeps moving
It's not that tab, it's the tab inside your printer that it hits. You need to pull it slightly out so that it swings freely, there is a spring attached and it should go one direction and spring back. If it's sticking you need to wiggle it free.
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

It is probably the toner cartridge, not the drum. I suggest swapping in old toner cartridges and drums to nail down the problem. I keep at least one old toner and one old drum for that purpose. By the way I just bought a toner cart from monoprice.com. It will not last as long as a Brother cart, but costs very little.
Here's the process:
1) Make sure that the printer is turned on. Open the front cover.
2) Take out the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly
3) Push down the green lock lever and take the toner cartridge out of the drum unit.
4) Be sure to seal up the toner cartridge tightly in a suitable bag so that toner powder does not spill out of the cartridge.
5) Unpack the new toner cartridge. Hold the cartridge level with both hands and gently rock it from side to side five or six times to spread the toner evenly inside the cartridge.
6) Pull off the protective cover.
7) Put the new toner cartridge firmly into the drum unit until you hear it lock into place. If you put it in
properly, the lock lever will lift automatically.
8) Clean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the green tab from right to left and left to right several times.
9) Put the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly back in the printer. Close the front cover.
That's it. You may also want to download the user manual as it has photos along with the instructions above. You can obtain that at:
Hope this helps!!
You can remove the drum and toner, remove toner from the drum unit then gently rock the toner from side to side for about six times to distribute the toner inside, then on the drum unit slide the green tab on the upper left hand from left to rigth for about six times and then put it back to the home position. Reinstall the toner back to the drum unit and then put the drum and toner back to the printer. closed the front cover. the toner light should turn off,
Hope this helps.
The problem your having is most likely the drum or the fuser. First, separate the two and clean any dirt you find, On the drum, there is a purple tab that moves left and right, do that a couple times, it will clean the wires. put it back together and do a test print. if you see the same lines with your old and new drum, then your fuser will need to be replaced.
take out the toner form the drum, on the left side of the toner there is a white tab sat in a half circle type cut out. it should be located at its far right position, carefully push it anti clockwise until it stops, may need a screwdriver to start it moving as its a bit stiff.
put it back in the drum and give it a try
Pull out the toner/drum and on the backside there is a blueish/purple tab, it slides from side to side along a corona wire. Move the tab back and forth several times and then put the toner/drum back in and reprint.
Below are the instructions on how to accomplish this task.
The toner light being on solid means that the toner cartridge is empty.
You will need to replace it with a new one.
When replacing the cartridge, please remember to seperate the toner and the drum, DO NOT THROW OUT THE DRUM.
If you have already changed the toner cartridge with a new one, then you will want to reset the toner cartridge.
To manually reset the printer, first, remove the toner from the printer and separate it from the drum unit.
With the toner cartridge in hand and the brother writing facing you, look to the left side of the cartridge. You should see an arc shaped opening with a white tab in it.
The tab is set at the right position and must be pushed back to the left side of the opening. To push the tab back, you must turn the grey gear attached to the front roller upwards as you push the tab.
Once the tab has been placed to the left position, the printer will accept it as a new toner cartridge.
Open the front cover and take out the toner/drum unit. On the top of the drum unit you will see a blut tab that you can slide side to side. Do this 10+ times and this should fix your issue. Make sure to put the blue tab back in the original start position which is believe is to the left on that model.
I had this problem too. I took out the drum and vacuum the drum with a vacuum cleaner ( no brush ) while at the same time manually rotate the drum cyclinder. It worked. After a month or two, you might have to do it again. But everytime, it solved the dust problem.
