Question about Western Digital My Book Home Edition 500 GB USB Hard Drive

Open Question

Have western digital My book hm edition 500gb. Connected and tranfered data using the accompanying software "memo sync". It showed all data was tranfered but I could only view it on the "memo sync" icon/software. When I click onto the WD drive and open it to view files I do not see them. It shows approx 70gb of space have been used on the WD HD and also when I transfered the files to the external hard drive it appeared everything went fine. Now my computer took a dump and I took the WD HD to my dads house, hooked it up to his computer and can't access the files or even see them. It still shows approx 70gb of space being occupied but I can't even see a way to access it or if the 70 gb are my files. I tried to download the accompanying "memo sync" software that I used to tranfer the data but that did not help. The computer recognizes "My Book" and opens it but only shows the install directions, auto run, ect... but I cannot see my files even though it shows approx 70 gb of space are being occupied. How do I access the data?

SOURCE: My Computer does not show: Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 500 GB external USB hard drive

Well i got a simple 320 gb external hard drive, and since the first month i had problems, i solve the recovery issue by opening the hard drive, and find it out, the inside was broken, and it got unplugged. so plugged it back and got my info. if your data its more important than 200dlls or less break the thing open, because if you claim the warranty they are not responsible for your information.

was the data on this drive transferred from the same computer, or another and now you're trying to read it? If not, was the data transferred from a computer using the same operating system?

When you connected the drive, did the Operating system prompt you to install drivers? If it didn't, your port may not be enabled.... Unless Windows "sees" the new device, it cannot install the drivers necessary for the device to be reconized by Windows.

I've provided a link to the WD device page and Quick Start Guide.....

http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=1413

If the drive had already been installed and now cannot read, WD has several solutions on their FAQ for the product. A link to the FAQ relating to not being recognized is below:
http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/std_alp.php?p_sid=V5A6f1pj&p_lva=&p_li=&p_accessibility=0&p_redirect=&p_page=1&p_cv=&p_pv=3.211&p_prods=228%2C209%2C211&p_cats=0&p_hidden_prods=&prod_lvl1=228&prod_lvl2=209&prod_lvl3=211&cat_lvl1=0&p_search_text=recognized&p_new_search=1&p_search_type=answers.search_nl

Let me know if you require further assistance.

SOURCE: My Book (WD Western Digital) says "The disk in drive _ is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?" My Book has important data but I can't access stored files on my new computer.

Hi,

The problem you are having is not uncommon and is fairly easy to resolve with the help of a pro. The Partition Table or File allocation table is modt likely damaged and that is why you are having difficulty accessing it.

You can try running chkdsk ?: /f from the run box(?=drive letter), this will pop up a warning that the disk will be checked on the next restart.

This does run a slight risk of damaging files but quite often recovers the drive successfully.

Your other option is to send it to a data recovery firm and have them extract the data without risk of damaging the files, then they can test the drive for any potential failures, format it and reload it with your data.

If you are in North America try Armor-IT Data Recovery, if you're in another region let me know which one and I'll make a recommendation for you.

Start with this document - http://www.wdc.com/en/library/usb/2079-701081.pdf You should have received a CD with your drive that has all the software you need on it. Additionally, you will need to have a home network hub or switch to connect your computer(s) and your drive. For additional information on home networks and how everything is connected, see this article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Home_network
