Have western digital My book hm edition 500gb. Connected and tranfered data using the accompanying software "memo sync". It showed all data was tranfered but I could only view it on the "memo sync" icon/software. When I click onto the WD drive and open it to view files I do not see them. It shows approx 70gb of space have been used on the WD HD and also when I transfered the files to the external hard drive it appeared everything went fine. Now my computer took a dump and I took the WD HD to my dads house, hooked it up to his computer and can't access the files or even see them. It still shows approx 70gb of space being occupied but I can't even see a way to access it or if the 70 gb are my files. I tried to download the accompanying "memo sync" software that I used to tranfer the data but that did not help. The computer recognizes "My Book" and opens it but only shows the install directions, auto run, ect... but I cannot see my files even though it shows approx 70 gb of space are being occupied. How do I access the data?

Well i got a simple 320 gb external hard drive, and since the first month i had problems, i solve the recovery issue by opening the hard drive, and find it out, the inside was broken, and it got unplugged. so plugged it back and got my info. if your data its more important than 200dlls or less break the thing open, because if you claim the warranty they are not responsible for your information.

was the data on this drive transferred from the same computer, or another and now you're trying to read it? If not, was the data transferred from a computer using the same operating system?

When you connected the drive, did the Operating system prompt you to install drivers? If it didn't, your port may not be enabled.... Unless Windows "sees" the new device, it cannot install the drivers necessary for the device to be reconized by Windows.

SOURCE: Problems access my My Book External Hard Drive

have you checked you usb connection? try unplugging it then plugging it back in see if computer recognises it then if not chances are your drive has failed
