I have a 6 gal Atwood hot water heater. I can

I have a 6 gal Atwood gas hot water heater. I can light the pilot and it will stay lite and then it lights the main burner. The main burner burns for a minute or so and turns off and the pilot goes out. Not sure whether the pilot is being turned off or blown out by the burner shutting down abruptly. I need help troubleshooting the problem. Kenny

I haven't made any changes. Wasn't sure where to start. Would this cause both the burner and pilot light to go out?

Leaking propane is red flag #1 and fire hazard.
Immediately update your insurance and then turn off gas.
If pilot is not staying lit, then gas leak can be cause of pilot problem since pressure on the line is reduced.
Other causes include bad gas control valve, air in the gas line, bad thermocouple, burner parts need cleaning, or all the above.
After fixing leak, replace thermocouple, clean combustion chamber and burner parts, and bleed gas line to remove air.

Burner lites but goes out after 2 or 3 min.

the white rodgers gas control needs to be replaced;
the way it works is: the thermocouple opens the pilot gas circuit and, holds it open
when it heats up by creating a magnetic field in the gas control then: when you turn
the knob on the gas control to "on" a valve inside the gas valve opens the main gas circuit and, electricity supplied by your RV keeps it open.
the main gas coil inside the gas valve is defective and, can not hold the main gas circuit to the burner open anymore.

I have an Atwood 6gal hot water heater with a 37c14u-5 controller. The pilot light will not stay lit. I have replaced the thermal coupler twice and the pilot tube with orfice once. It's still not...

Try removing the thermocouple where it attaches to gas control, and spray a little WD-40 in the hole, then spin a rolled up small piece of steel wool in the hole as well, then blow it out with compressed air if you can. Then reconnect thermocouple. Make sure thermocouple tip is getting good flame under it, and if that doesn't cure it, then it's time to replace gas control.

Installed new thermocoupler heater still will not stay lite

Make sure the pilot light is hitting the thermocoupler, even when burner kicks in. Sometimes a dirty pilot tube will cause a weak pilot and it wont continuely hit the thermocoupler. I use air to clean mine. Hope this helps.

the gas valve is what you need to replace, the thermocoupling only tells the gas valve that it is ready for a flame and lets a little gas out, but the gas valve is not letting the gas out,, there is a screen in the gas valve it may be clogged not letting the gas thru, but at the age of your unit I would even consider changing the unit insted of investinf more money into this one

After a few minutes of burner heating the water, gas shuts off.

A couple of things to check:

If possible, remove the pilot gas assembly and clean the gas jet and thermocouple - they can get carboned up and stop working properly. Make sure the pilot flame and deflector is aimed properly and making the thermocouple glow red hot. If the problem persists, you may want to replace the thermocouple and also check the propane regulator.
