It may BE losing fuel pressure, Robert. Check the fuel pressure and flow rate at the fuel rail. Filter, plugs, and cap have nothing to do with fuel pressure - your fuel pump and pressure regulator are the only things that can change fuel pressure very much.
Ford did not put a 2.5 in a Ranger, maybe a 2.3 ?

3.0 - The CMP sensor& synchronizer/shaft are located behind the intake manifold (i.e., back near the firewall on a Ranger) on the top of the cylinder block. If you just need to replace the sensor, it is a simple job of unplugging the electrical connector and removing the screws holding the sensor in place. Here is a sketch of the sensor to give you an idea what to look for:
Did you check the relay? Power goes from ignition switch to relay to pump. Where B+ stops is your problem.
Run a pair of jumper wire from battery to pump just to see if pump works. If it buzzes and runs its ok.
Then you definately know its something in the control circuit.
its your fule filter theres 2 of them i the 86 ford ranger you need to change them the location of the fule filters are on google just tipe in fule filter 1986 ford ranger location it should pop up there about 8 dollors a peace easy fix and your truck is like new also get a new battey if you havent k have a good day. oh i know this because i own one had the same problem
p0102= mass air flow sensor is dirty or needs to be changed. p0232= recheck your wiring. you might have crossed wires when changing fuel pump or your fuel sensor might be faulty
