Is this perhaps a hydro trans? if so, try putting the shift lever in neutral, then let off the brake pedal, use the shift lever to go forward and to neutral to stop - same with reverse, don't even use the brake pedal except for emergency stops. if it's a manual shift, it's possible the belt is incorrect, and/or the belt guides are bent or the belt is improperly routed - the belt guides are important as they allow the belt to "blossom" off the engine pulley, reducing the "shock" load when engaged - hope this helps

My MTD will not move when I put it in forward or reverse

MTD utilizes a 2 belt variable pulley system. The first step if you lose drive is to attempt to reset the system. Place in neutral and let clutch out with speed selector in highest position or press the motion pedal all the way down. Then attempt to drive at a moderate speed. If still no motion then check both belts. Be sure they are on all the pulleys. The rear/upper belt should have tension on it all the time. The front/ lower belt will be loose when the clutch is depressed and will tighten when released or the motion pedal is depressed.

I don't quite get you, if the belt is running but the rear axle is not turning then your transmission is shot. If the belt is running and the rear axle is spinning with no forward or backward motion, then someone took the back wheels off and put them back on without installing the keyways.

Clutch vibration and jerking at slow speeds.

Check the drive belt. It probably has chunks missing or at least has flat spots (narrow spots) that cause the belt to jump every time it goes around a pulley. That will set up a heck of a vibration. Also check the pulleys for free movement. The drive belt is above the blade drive belt....

I don't know if you have a hydrostatic or gear drive trans, but you should be able to go slower either by shifting to a lower gear or by moving the hydro drive lever to a slower speed. Always run the engine at full speed. Slowing the mower down by slowing the engine is extremely hard on the motor. It need the higher rpm's to keep it cool and not have to work as hard. There is a brake adjustment on the left rear axle. There is a brake disc with lever and a nut holding it on. Turn the nut clockwise about a half turn at a time to adjust the brake and check it. You don't want to get it too tight or it won't roll.
