The exact definition of this error is "Problem with transfer-transfer servo start error"... NOT the transfer roller. The service manual directs you to the Transfer roll service check.
The service check tests for proper operation of the HVSP, system board, and sensors.
The most likely cause of your problem is the HVSP ( High Voltage Power Supply ).
913 Transfer Roller Error
The printer fails to completely
transfer the image to the paper or
does not transfer it at all.
The image transfer roll does not
lift when paper is passing over it.
Suspect either the transfer roller solenoid or transfer roller motor malfunction.
The printer would have to be professionaly serviced by authorized service centre.

The transfer roller is missing, not touching the drum, poor contact to the transfer high voltage or transfer high voltage shorted. The trasfer roller is below the drum. Its bearings are on springs to press the paper against the drum. The drum rotates it by gears at one end. One of the bearings have electrical contact with the spring and the spring is connected to the DC controller. The transfer roller receives high voltage that attracts the toner from the drum. It's current is measured and when it's not within specifications the error occures.
Here's an article in the Lexmark website to guide you on what to do when having 917.00 Service Transfer Roll error. Just click on this link: http://bit.ly/d7uyzZ. Follow the instructions carefully. Basically, when having this kind of error, you will need to primarily change the transfer roll or the High Voltage Power Supply. If this doesn't help, it may require service to replace the system board assembly, transfer roll left and right arm.
A 917 transfer roll error code on all models at service level may display if an incorrect level HVPS is installed in a printer that has the erase lamp assembly installed. Check to make sure the correct level HVPS is installed.
the transfer roller is a foam roller that transfers the toner onto the paper. It will be visible with toner removed, a little wider than a piece of paper, and about the thickness of a roll of quarters. I don't know how to physically remove it on your model, but transfer roller issues in general can be remedied by removing the transfer roller and wrapping it in packing tape until the tape comes off clean.
While you're in there, vacuum everything out for good measure; but never, ever use canned air on a laser printer.
This is a transfer roll error. Take the toner cartridge out and clean the area under it. The transfer roll is a roller which is right under the toner cartridge. make sure the ie is clean . It may need to be replaced.
If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it. Thanks, Joe
