Question about General Electric GSH22JSXSS Stainless Steel Side by Side Refrigerator

1 Answer

I have a GSH22JSXSS that has begun to frost over. I took the interior panel off and defrosted it with a hair drier, but freezes over quickly (day or two). Fridge is not staying cold either and I noticed frost on the vent where the cold air enters the fridge. I tried putting vaseline around the door for a better seal. Thoughts?

I replaced the heater on my GSHSSJTCSS but it too burned out. I have replaced the thermostat. What else could be causing the heater to blow out like that? If there a test for the mother board or other sensor in the system? Thanks

I have frost build up on all the food in my freezer primarily on the 3-4 shelves located below the ice maker. Checked the tube coming from the back to front going into the freezer door. Looks ok. Frost build up worsens and spreads over time. I have no ideas.

Hi, With the information you supplied i'm going to assume there is an ice build up at the rear of the freezer. Your problem is going to be with your defrost system. I will also assume you have the ability to repair this yourself. This is going to be one of three problems with your refridgerator, 1st thing to do is remove shelfs and panel in the back of the should see ice build up on the evaporator...don't worry get a hair dryer and melt the ice. Next locate the wires for the heater...using a multi meter test the heater for condinuity...if the heater is bad replace it, If the heater is good replace the defrost thermostat..the stat normally is a barrel looking part clipped onto the evaporator pipe. The last possible problem could be the evaporator fan, have you heard the fan running in the past few hours?..if you are not sure pull the panel out to where you can see fan and watch it over an hour to see if it turns. I have included links with pictures of what the parts you need to check are: defrost stat heaters evap fan. Hope this helps. If you have any other questions please feel free to comment again. If you decide to get a repair guy in should not cost you any more then $120 - $200 depending on make/model/problem Good luck!

Whirlpool refrigerator showing code 888 and is not cooling or freezing. Tech said it would cost $600 to fix it because the computer panel failed. He didn't even look at the fridge. Is this correct?

Remove components from the freezer area. Most of the plastic is held in by screws. Once you can see the coils see if they are heavy frosted. If so, remove all food and turn fridge off. Allow unit to defrost, use hair drier to assist the defrosting. Look for a glass vial approx 6-8 inches long with a fine wire that looks as though it was wound around a pencil and inserted into the vial. This unit can be unplugged and replaced with a new one. It is a heating element designed to defrost frost from the coils.

Freezer is not getting cold

Can you remove the rear panel you see the ice buildup on the evaporator? I believe your refrigerator has a defective defrost element. You need to unplug refrigerator remove the panel and see what type of frost pattern you have. Here is a link to what you may see behind that panel=> HERE This is a link to what you said you see with frost on the rear panel=> HERE Can you confirm that your refrigerator model number is GSL25JFPBS? Look around the fresh food section door for your model number. Here is a photo HERE with the locations number 230 is the defrost heater=> WR51X10055 Defrost Heater Assembly

And location number 240 is the defrost thermostat=> WR50X10068 Defrost Thermostat

I would like to know what frost pattern and the true model number of your refrigerator so I can help you better. If it has the frosted over evaporator like in the photo above you can defrost with a hair drier and the refrigerator may cool again up to a week until you can replace the defrost heater and defrost thermostat. How to test these parts can be found on the same page as the part numbers I posted here, Thanks Sea Breeze

I have a Hotpoint hss251fmd and the freezer and refrigerator are getting warm at the top. the bottom and the back are cold. The freezer Is cold but not freezing everything. There's alot of frost inside...

Sounds like defrost cycle has been altered. Look into back of freezer and see if a layer of frost is building. If yes then unplug and place items from freezer into an ice chest or another freezer. Remove the panel that showed the frost layer and defrost the evaporator coils with a hair drier Examine the WR51X10055 Defrost Heater and test if you cannot see burn marks HERE It does not hurt to also change the WR50X10068 Defrost Thermostat Instructions on replacing the defrost thermostat are also on the same page. Here is a=> Service Manual
I will be here to answer any questions, Thanks Sea Breeze

Freezer not that cold. very noisy indeed, lots of thick ice inside. should i take off the panel behind the freezer drawers, to let ice there defrost?

Yes, It needs a defrost. You will have to take out all the food, unplug it and remove all the shelves and or drawers. Remove the back panel to gain access to the evaporator coil, (make sure you have the proper screw driver or socket first). You will need some towels and a hair drier. Once inside to the coil/fan area, start with your hair drier and melt all the frost/ice out as quickly as you can. Once all is done, start looking for any wires that look out of place or burnt. Your fridge has a defrost timer and a defrost termination switch that is mounted to the coil. Look for a round metal switch that should be clipped on to one of the coils tubes. This much frost/ice build up is due to ether a bad door seal, or the fridge is not defrosting itself proper. Check all this and then put the rear panels back on. clean up the mess. Plug it back in and start it up. You will want to be sure it is cooling ok before you put all your food back in. So put a cup of water on one of the shelves and check it in about hours to see if it has started to freeze. Hope this helps Fixya up.

Freeze will not freeze.

I had a similar problem. The frost in the back is an indication that your coils are frozen. This could be from food packages falling out of the freezer drawers in the back and blocking the air circulation vents or maybe the freezer door was not closed completely and letting moist/humid air in and freezing the coils.
For me it was the first problem listed.I had to completely empty the freezer and Frig. and take the back panel off in the freezer. There you will see the coils and lots of ice!
1. Remove all items from the frig. and freezer and unplug frig.
2. Pull all the freezer drawers out.
3. On my GE side by side I took the light cover off and removed the bulb. There you will see two panel screws. Remove the screws.
4. Now pull out the mouldings on each side and you should be able to remove the panel.
5. Take a hair drier and completely defrost all the ice from the coils.
Be sure to keep plenty of towels handy for all the water mess. Remember to keep an eye on the drain tray in the back of the frig. and use a sponge to collect the water that will build up.
Hope this helps!.....

Just defrosted my freezer and is akll frosted over

When you say it is frosted over, do you mean the interior of the freezer is frosted, or the evaporator coils?

A couple things to check for:

1. Is the door gasket making a good seal when you close the door? A good quick fix for a bad seal on the gasket is to rub a thin layer of Vaseline (the original jelly kind works best) on the rubber to help it stick and to fill any scratches that might be keeping it from sealing tightly.

2. Is the fan running on the inside of the freezer? The evaporator coil in the freezer needs a fan to blow air over the coils to keep them from freezing over. They don't run continuously, and on some units will turn off when the door is open, so try holding the door switch shut when you check.

3. Is the defrost cycle working? Frost-free freezers have a defrost cycle in which a small heater turns on to thaw any frost that has begun to form. To check the functionality of the heater and the defrost timer will probably require a visit from a technician... It would take a while to explain it here, but if check the first two and come up empty handed, post back. You will need a volt/ohm meter.

I would check the first two

Might be icy. First, fully defrost by either removing the rear panel and using a hair dryer (dangerous) or leave it off and open for two days. Check door gaskets and clean or repair. Clean condenser coils under the unit. Now, take off the back lower panel and find the compressor. Largest pipe is what we're interested in. Start unit. It will frost the pipe. After 5 minutes, frost should be replaced by ice, dry or wet...not frost. If still frosty, you need freon. Hard to know what the right price would be.

What else could it be? Thermostat, defrost timer. Try my stuff before going on.
