go to www.r4ds.com then look down towards the bottom left corner of the page and it says
R4 v1.18 Kernel underlined with a little blue flashing explosion next to it saying "NEW" click on that link, A new page should open, scroll down to where it says "English Krenel v1.18" and click on eithere link "download 1" or "download 2" it doesn't matter which. A screen that says do you want to save or open this file should appear, click save and decide where to save it to. Once you have done that and it has been downloaded, If you don't already have winrar on your computer type winrar in to google and you will be shown a series of options follow the further on screen instructions to download and install. Then you need to find the file in your "My Computer" right click on the right thing and select Extract here it will do that and then you can copy and paste it straight onto your micro SD card, then download games and you will need to extract the downloaded games using Winrar as well so don't delete it.
A good site for games i find is www.romulation.net and register for a free account, there are instructions on the site how to do that.

There is a possibility that the r4 cart might need a firmware update.
The latest firmware update can be found http://www.r4ds.me/index-en.htmlR4 DS V1.18 kernel2008-04-24 is the latest firmware according to the site.
Updating to the latest firmware will resolve 90% of the problems that may exist for games. There is also a list of games noted to work on the R4 located http://wiki.scorpei.com/index.php/R4_compatibility_list check to see if the game you are trying to play is listed and what it might take to get it working.
you need to go to youtube and look up the r4 files required to run r4, you need to choose what system you will use when using the card as you dont simply just drag games in to the card directory you actually need the operating files as well for the card or it will not recognise it. hope this helps, tim

if you got a software disc with it put the files on to the micro sd card if you didnt then download files from r4s web site and put these on the micro sd card.
then download the nds files from the web (make sure they are ***.nds not zip files) then just put them on to the mem card. insert the mem card in to your r4 and happy playing.
hey have you got r4 II i mean does your box just say r4? cause if it only says r4 (not r4 advance) then go to www.r4.cn and download r4 kernal 1.18. Yay! by the way how big is your micro sd?
Er maybe its because the r4 is fake. fake r4's can brick your ds. i didnt know r4 sdhc came out. i have r4 II do you know how to fix water problems? cause my ds has water problems on the lcd screen. any suggestions?
Do you use a flash card,like R4 Ds or the G6.If so then the files on the disk maybe corrupt.Just format your Micro Sd card that is in the flash card then put the firmware on it.If you dont know how look on youtube.
