It boots up okey and you can download demos and eveyrthing else but when you insert a disc it does not read the disc it keeps loading circle going on and on, it does not read standard or blue ray discs or games.
I remember I had this problem a few months ago. First thing I did was check the warranty! It happened while I was playing a game and was forced to turn the ps3 off at the switch because holding down the power button wouldn't work.
It means that there is a problem with your hard drive of some sort and you can give it to sony and they will give you a refurbished console free. You need to be in warranty but they still did mine free when I was a couple of weeks out.
I guess another solution might be to replace your hard drive, but don't do anything unless you really know how to.
I have exactly the same problem, I even changed the blu-ray lazer but I still get the same problem, I think it could be the little motor that spins the disc, it seems to be stuck, Ill try fixing it or changing it and Ill let you all know if it worked.

I thought I should pass thing tip along, seeing as how so many people are having trouble.
It is a solution for PS3 fat models (the old ones). If your PS3 has suddenly stopped reading disc's it might not be the laser, it could just be a type of data corruption, but there is a way around it.
Go onto the PlayStation Network and download any game demo. Install the demo. Insert the game you want to play. Now go into the demo game that you downloaded and installed as if you were going to play it. As soon as it loads, quit out of the demo and go back to the main menu of your PS3; the game you wanted to play should now be available. ENJOY!
If this tip doesn't work then sorry, it is your blu-ray laser, however, it has worked for myself and one other that I know of. Hope it works for you too!
1. download and install a psn game or game demo
2. put in the disc of the game or video you want to play or watch
3. load the psn game or demo as if you were going to play it
4. quit the demo as soon as you get to the start menu of it
5. go and play or watch the game or video you wanted to, sucka, cause it works now!!!
I hope this works for you, and if it does, spread the word!
The solution is simple. The God of War 3 demo is a dual disc. When initially inserted, the ps3 will automatically go to the game tab. Scroll over to the video tab and go up. District 9 will play on your ps3! It will say "District 9 Blu-Ray!"
ur disc reader is faulty/broke a quick way 2 get you back on games/ dvds go onto a demo or if you dont have download 1 via ps store and go onto it 1s ur on it press the ps button on your controller and the disc icon should be there now click onit and say yes 2 quit demo and ur sorted u will have 2 do this every time
hi my sony PS3 playstation console won't load any games or read them; i ahve hardly played the console and only had it 10 months. PLEASE IF YOU HAVE ANY IDEAS TO FIX THE CONSOLE PLEASE ADVISE URGENTLY AS I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO; I AM STUCK!!
Do you have the receipt? If you do, return it to the retailer and ask if they can replace it (they are legally obliged to replace it where I live, I'm not too sure about Asia though, but you should try anyway).
Or try to phone Sony and ask them (their customer service number should be on their website).
