Canon SD800 will not turn on.

My Canon SD800 will not turn on. From various posts, I've heard that a possible problem could that there is dust/sand/grit stuck in the lens. Any suggestions?

If youve had it under a year you can try sending it back for warranty and see if they can fix it. However their warranty service sucks if its not actually something wrong with the camera. Maybe try and find a local store that fixes cameras and see if they can clean it out?

My PowerShote SD800IS lens will not retract and makes a grinding noise. Please help!

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ... Here are some troubleshooting steps that you can try that may (or may not) correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty (or repair cost approaches that of the camera), they're worth that try. Some of the later steps do involve some risk to the camera, so carefully weigh your options before deciding to conduct them:

WHEN I OPEN MY CAMERA THERE IS A WORD E18.

Hi,

Canon E18 error shows when the lens gets stuck while trying to extend.
  • This error indicate that focusing ring got stuck or jammed due sand, dust, may be due to external shock caused by dropping the device. try compressed air. With a fine tip blow off gun around lens barrel. It should remove all dust and sand. Turn the camera on this will solve the problem.
  • You can gently bump the camera to try to free the focusing ring.
  • You can try to turn camera ON at the table (facing it to the ceiling), don't put camera down face to the floor when opening.
If motor is running but lens won't retract sometimes lens would slip off with the gear or break off a tooth in the gear when it gets dropped. Try to gently move the lens barrel around with the finger and see if it is moving, but if tooth or gear is broken lens will move once or twice then it will stuck again.

Else your camera need to be disassembled to get at the focusing ring at Service Center.

Thanks and have a nice day

The len's on these are very suseptable to any dirt, dust, sand, and grit, one little grain in the gears and stuck, I just cleaned two, one was OK, the other was beyond repair, it can be just dust from tossing it in a purse or pocket, it gets in between the case and lens, use a dust proof bag or case, the ones that come with them are open and terrible, toss up, what costs more, having it repaired or buy new, or buy different sealed type, which they are coming out with, I heard of a life-proof camera, sounds like what we need. Or upgrade to a higher end camera, they are better, Hope this helps.

The lens mechanism had probably got some dust, sand or grit jamming it and stopping it from retracting. Sadly the lens will be difficult to repair yourself as it needs to be completly stripped from the camera. Find a good repair shop and get a quote locally.

Dirt jammed in lens barrel area

Hello Dear,
Both of you are required to take your camera to a Canon Care Centre or an expert and get the camera cleaned thoroughly, once all the dirt is removed the camera will work fine but this is not possible at your place.
