You know the solution is a new pop off valve, but they can be hard to find. A TEMPORARY solution is to get a 1/4 inch cast iron plug and replace the leaking valve with it. It will get you through until you can get the correct valve

ASSUMING THIS IS AN ELECTRIC MOTOR DRIVEN SINGLE STAGE COMPRESSOR, IF THE COMPRESSOR USES OIL IN THE CRANKCASE, THE PRESSURE SWITCH SHOULD CUT OFF AT 125 PSI AS THE ACT OF COMPRESSION HEATS THE AIR QUITE HOT. THERE IS ALWAYS SOME OIL THAT PASSED THE PISTON RINGS IN THE COMPRESSED AIR. IF THE COMPRESSED AIR GETS HOT ENOUGH, THE OIL VAPOR CAN IGNITE AND THE FLAME CAN CARRY TO THE TANK FOR AN IMPRESSIVE EXPLOSION. THIS ORDINARILY DOES NOT HAPPEN BELOW 175PSI OR MORE.

OILLESS COMPRESSORS CAN BE SET TO 150 PSI. WITH EITHER TYPE OF COMPRESSOR, THE HOSE SHOULD BE ATTACHED TO THE REGULATOR OR THE REGULATOR STACK, NEVER TO THE COMPRESSOR, AS THE COMPRESSED AIR LOSES MUCH OF ITS HEAT WHILE IN THE RECEIVER. Leaking around Pressure Switch. Ordered & replaced switch but still leaking


Some pressure switches have a valve that reliefs the compressor head pressure when the motor stops and closes the head pressure relief valve when the motor runs.
There is a check valve that keeps air pressure from coming back to the compressor head and the relief valve.
I think the check valve is leaking tank pressure to the relief valve and compressor head.
The check valve is where the pressure switch mounts on to and it mounts threaded on to the compressor tank.
Try replacing the check valve

POP OFF VAVLE ON HEAD KEEPS POPPING UP


The over-pressure relief valve may be defective if the valve is opening before the desired tank pressure is reached. If not, then the shut-off pressure adjustment (if there is one) may be set wrong. You'll need to find out from the manufacturer exactly what static tank pressure the compressor is designed to provide and then determine if it is working correctly. If so, then the relief valve might be defective. DO NOT attempt to defeat the relief valve under any circumstances - it can result in compressor damage or a dangerous tank failure.

My compressor is building to much pressure and blowing out the relief valve. what do I check


You didn't give the model of your compressor so, for an electric model: Check your gages while the tanks are filling. If the pressure gets to the rated high pressure level for your model and keeps going until the relief valve pops, the problem is with the pressure switch. It isn't turning the motor off when it's supposed to. If the relief valve pops before getting to the max pressure the tanks are supposed to be at then the spring in the valve is broken or weakened to where it pops too early. Replace the relief valve.

Is the reed valve part of the pressure switch


relief valve should only open in a over pressure condition. If it is opening prior to reaching pressure ....replace it.

I have a C2006 Type 4 Porter Cable pancake compressor which will build pressure all the way up to 150psi then cut off as it should but there will be a loud hissing and pressure drop until the cut on...


first you have a reciprocating pump and the hissing you ear probably comes from the unloading valve on the pressure switch(it will look like a bike tire valve)if there is air coming out the valve when the compressor is off it probably means you have a bad check valve.This valve is use to unload the pressure inside the pump for an easy start .a motor always drive more amps on start up if you cant unload this pressure you will trip the overload(you probably have a reset button on your motor)check the specs on your pressure relief valve ,its a small pump maybe its just adjusted to high.in this case your pressure relief valve will open .If the pressure is fine and there is air coming out the relief valve then you have to replace it!to adjust your pressure turn the screw on your pressure switch clockwise to increase and counterclockwise to decrease .usually you have a 30 psi between cut-in and cut-off called the pressure differential.It can be adjusted on some pressure switch.be sure you put some teflon tape on the treads if you replace something to avoid air leaks.hopes this help!

Compressor not building enough pressure.only 5lbs.


It seems that your cut off switch or your relief valve is not working. If the cut off switch stops the compressor at 5psi instead of 100/120, then the switch is defective. If the relief valve operates (loud whooshing sound and the compressor keeps running), then the relief valve needs replacing. Normally the relief valve wears out first as the seal gets worn or the spring fails.

COMPRESSOR RUNS, FILLS TANK, AND THEN LEAKS OFF ALL THE PRESSURE. WHAT IS GOING ON?


Is the air "leaking" from the pressure relief valve? If so it is either faulty or it is doing what is supposed to do. The pressure relief valve is there in case the pressure switch fails.The tank could blow up if the pressure switch fails, so the pressure relief valve is there as a secondary measure to insure the tank does not receive too much air pressure. Assuming your gauge is operating properly, watch the gauge to see if it reaches the maximum pressure (check your manual to find the maximum PSI) or if it goes over the maximum pressure. If it goes over the maximum pressure then replace the pressure switch. If it the motor stops at the maximum pressure, replace the pressure relief valve.

What pressure is it popping off at? You might have to adjust the pressure switch to a lower setting.

A/c compressor runs with dash switch off then loses freon from relief valve


we can solve this, but i need more info, a/c compressor should not run with the dash switch to off, so there could be a short in the switch or something is powering your a/c compressor.

another thing is the gas being relieve to your relief valve, your condenser fan could not be running there by creating a high head pressure to relieve on the relief valve or the valve could be open already and not the type where it seats back if the pressure is already low.

are you just putting gas right now as these things happens?

if so, you could have a clogged in your system, building a high head pressure to relieve in the valve.

the clogged could be in the filter dryer, or the expansion valve inside the evaporator coil.
