The problem is basically that the phone has an "out of range" message even when sitting on the base. There are two handsets and they both display the same message. There is no dial tone, there is nothing when trying to access the line. I have Vonage phone service and I am sure that the internet and the phone adapter are working. I don't think that it is a power issue either. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
I had the same problem w/a digital phone that I received from Time Warner Cable's "All the Best" package. The promotion supplied 2 phones by GE. I tried to make a call one morining and I had no dial signal, both phones displayed "out of range". I removed the battery on each phone and put them back in. The problem was solved. After resolution of the problem I contacted Time Warner about the issue, and to no surprise they had no answer or explanation to my problem. The representative stated that the phones were a promotion and I would have to contact the manufacturer of the phone system. What is wrong with major companies that boast "quality and service", continuously passing the buck and not assuming the blame for products associated with their name brand? I always tell friends and family to keep in mind "buyer beware"! I guess integrity and assurance of getting what you pay for is now null and void in these times. What a shame! I've taken back my power!! I always ask questions and I do my homework on all purchases, needless to say promotional advertising. Sorry for standing on my soapbox, but my fingers have an energy of their own when I feel taken advantage of in this vast world of profit and greed.

out of range means it can't receive a signal from the base station. The most likely problem lies with the base station. Special when 2 or even more handsets are giving this message.
Try to reset (unplug the power cord and reinsert it) the base station. When it does not come back after half a minute, the station must have a major problem.
Hello Helen, I would tend to think the Handset gets regular updates from the base to refresh its' display with information even if not in a phone call. If the handset does not receive a 'regular' message or 'heart-beat' it will likely say "out of range". The base station can hear the handset, but the handset can't hear the basestation as well is likely. If you bring the hand-set closer to the base-station does the issue go away? If not, I would tend to think there is RF interference or the set is defective. Perhaps scanning for a new channel would be helpful if the set supports that capability. Jeff
If you are not too far away-not "out of range" then try rehoming/pairing the handset with the base unit. You probably need the phones together to do this. Your manual will explain how-it will have been done in the original setup.
Please check that you have correctly registered the second handset to the base. It may be necessary to de-register the second handset and then re-register it. "Out of range" just means the second handset is not within range of the base phone it was registered to.
The handsets are reading out of range because they have lost connection with the base. This happens mostly during peak power demands or power outages, but can also happen when the phone is unplugged for any amount of time. This can also cause, at times, the answering machine to stop picking up calls. To remedy this issue, reset the phone system. Please follow the instructions below:
To reset the phone: 1. Disconnect the power adapter, phone line, and remove all batteries from the base and all handsets. Leave it disconnected for 30 seconds to reset the base.
2. Place the batteries in the handsets first and then plug in the power adapter and phone line. Do not place the batteries back in the base yet.
3. Put the handset in the charge cradle.
4. It may take up to 1 minute for the "Out of Range" to clear from the display.
5. Once the "Out of Range" is cleared from the handset place the back up batteries back into the base.
The handset/base keeps a record of who it’s registered to. The base
also keeps a record of how many handsets are registered to it.
the de-register function on the handset deletes the handset from the
base (decrements the count) and deletes the base info from the handset.
All this requires that the base and handset can communicate with each
To remove the base data from a handset when out of range
of the base, press and hold the ‘end’ button and the ‘#’ button
simultaneously until the phone beeps. It will now be de-registered from
However, the base will still have this handset in it’s record.
de-register all handsets from the base, remove power and the base
handset. Press and hold the ‘flash/find hs’ button while applying
power. Wait for the beep and release the button. The charge light will
now flash. Sit any handset in the cradle. When the flashing stops, all
handsets are inhibited from connecting.
However, the handset
still appears to be connected to the base unit. Pressing talk will give
an ‘Unable to connect’ message. To re-register the handsets to the
base, you have to de-register the handset first with the two button
Of interest, pressing ‘*’ and ‘#’ on the handset while
reconnecting the battery is suppose to reset the handset. Doing the
same on the base unit puts you in some sort of diagnostic mode. Press
speaker to exit.
Unplug the battery. Hold down The * (star) and the #(hash) keys simultaneously. Re-connect the battery, phone will beep and screen will be blank. Press the voicemail (righthand silver key under the lcd screen). As above EEPROM/RAM message will appear. Place handset on base and your problem is solved.
