When I turn on my computer it shuts itself off before windows xp completely loads. I just used it yesterday and it did not do this.

This could be due to overheating. To protect the circuits, the computer will shut down if it gets too hot. Try this, turn on the computer, hit F8 multiple times per second until you get a black and white screen with a number of options. Do not select any of them. Just move the cursor with the arrow key up and down. Does the computer shut down after a few minutes? If so, likely cause is over heating.

Inspect the vents on the sides and bottom of the computer. Are they free of dust and lint? When you use the computer, do you have it on a hard surface or is it on something that would block the air flow?

Can you feel a slight breeze from the vent holes? Use a small piece of tissue paper to help determine if the fan is working. Can you hear the fan? If there is no breeze or fan noise, the fan might be bad and need replaced. Unless you are skilled, I'd then take it to a local computer repair shop to replace the fan.

What would cause my aspire 5630 to shut down sporadically?

Shut down sporadically, caused by rising temperatures on the processor (processor overheat). Processor overheat, caused by damage to the processor fan. Processor fan function to reduce the processor temperature.

Possibilities and solutions
1. The possibility of sluggish processor fan. Processor fan spins, with a low speed, so it can not reduce the processor temperature.
Solution: clean the processor fan with a vacuum cleaner, or replace the processor fan.
2. The possibility of fan processor die.
Solution: replace the processor fan.

The characteristics of damage to the processor fan
After the laptop is turned off (more than 1 hour), the laptop can turn on and survive + - 30 minutes. In the period of + - 30 minutes, the laptop died suddenly, because the processor temperature exceeds safe limits (shut down temperature).

How to check
Laptop is turned off (more than 1 hour), then turn on. Download and install software to check the processor temperature. Ex. Real Temp 3.60. See the change in temperature. If the temperature continues to rise, it can certainly cause damage to the processor fan.
- Normal temperature, when first turned on + - 38oC
- Normal temperature, after turn on for hours 40oC - 45oC
- Temperature overheat processor, when first turned on 60oC - 65oC

Shuts down not allowing Windows XP to start

If the Computer shuts down automatically, then the issue might usually be due to the overheating issues.
The overheating issues develop, if the Cooling Fan in the Computer is malfunctioning.
The Processors are designed to shut down automatically, if there are any overheating issues.
For such issues, it would be better to get the Unit examined at the Service Center.
Replacing the Cooling Fan should resolve the issue.

Hope this helps.

Computer is a Lenovo TC M52 P4 / 3.2 - I have added a sound card, a PCI express Geforce graphics card and a NIC card. The problem seems to be overheating as it only shuts down like this during the summer...

The case fan should start running as soon as you turn on the computer. I would replace the fan with a higher capacity (CFM). If you have a case that can take 2 case fans, I would install the send fan. Also with the case off, check that the CPU cooler fan is functioning. With the quick shut off, I would suspect that the CPU cooler fan is not functioning. I could be impeded by dust. Vacuum and blow out any dust on the motherboard, fans and battery fan while you have the case off.
This should aleviate the shutoff problem due to overheating.
Let me know if this solves the problem.
Please rate this solutution. Thanks.

I've had a bad dust problem and my cpu fan began making a loud whirring noise and finally the computer shut down altogether. Took the cover off totally cleaned out the dust and turned the power back on....

If the computer detects overheating or fan failure it will shut down automatically. If you replace the fan you should be fine. Remove your old fan and try to get one that connects the same way, some of them connect directly to the heat sink, others to the motherboard.

Turns on, then shuts down before anything shows on monitor

Is there more than one fan inside the computer? Did you double-check the connection from the fan to the motherboard? Sometimes a computer will shut down if it doesn't sense that the fan is turning on, to prevent the computer from overheating.
