Spark plugs are being replaces every 3 or 4 mowing

After I mow 3 or 4 times I have to replace the sparks plug so the mower
will start. The plug is black. I am using alot of gas and when it does start black smoke comes out. If this is the carberator tell me where this is located on the mower and how to fix it. Thanks

It is a Briggs & Stratton mower and don't know about the numbers except it says 4.5 hp. I will bring my book and see if this information is in it. I can not regulate the choke it is preset. I do check the oil and it seems to be ok. Thanks

MTD mowers use engines from a couple different manufacturers, and the 22" one comes in a few different engine sizes. Does the engine say MTD, Briggs & Stratton, or some other brand? And is it a 139, 148, or 158cc engine? Or some other size?
The choke might be stuck, which can cause your symptoms. Sometimes the fix can be as simple as finding the choke and tapping gently on it with a wrench.

Also, how's the oil level? If it's losing oil, you might have a more serious problem than a simple stuck choke.

Remove the top plastic hood and make sure you clean any grass buildup around the governor, carburetor, recoil fins and especially inside the air cleaner. Many times the air cleaner is plugged with old grass and the motor cannot breath, causing the black smoke. Replace the filter if it has any signs of oil contamination or debris buildup. It's a cheap fix that shouldn't be overlooked.

Again, ensure the choke is being completely opened after the mower is running smoothly. If not , the choke will make black smoke come out of the exhaust, the spark plugs fouled. But also make sure the air cleaner is not blocked with duct or ddebris.

The carb is located under the aircleaner it sounds like the mower is being fan at full throttle this on some mowers applies the choke try ajusting the throttle to full then slightly back to open choke.

Turns over but won't start

Hello Marsha, 3 things needed for an engine to run are; compression, spark and fuel. You said you checked spark and you have none. Did you check with spark tester or by grounding the plug to engine block? If you don't have any spark check fuses and wiring to make sure all is good. Then if you have a multimeter you will have to check coil for resistance. If your not sure you should take to a qualified technician. Hope this helps. Good luck!

Does the mower die right away (cuts out) or does it sputter to a halt. Sputtering out would indicate a fuel problem. If it just cuts out when hot, then more likely an ignition problem. Your coil may need replacing. Take a close look at the coil wire (spark plug wire) and its routing. Make sure it's not touching part of the engine where it's heating up and has caused a "leak" to ground it out when it gets hot. If all is well then check your spark when the engine is hot and cuts out. Make sure you have a very good blue spark and not a weak one (check it cold first and then compare!). Again, indicating a possible ignition coil problem. Hope this helps and best of luck to you.

Lawnboy 10301 won't start

you need spark, gas and timing to make it run. have you checked spark? sounds like you are getting gas. did you hit anything hard with the blade while mowing? this can throw it out of time.
