Door Doesn't latch shut

The door latches on my R-1480 have an apparent broken spring as sliding the latches up and down can be done loosely with no spring tension and a pop in the door was heard when the problem started. From reading other similar stories this would seem to be the problem. How do I remove the door and what part number do I likely need and where can I get it? Thank you for your help.

  • tomahan Nov 18, 2007

I ordered the latch head and spring just to be sure from Tritronics. Hopefully the parts will be here in a day or two and I'll let you know how it works out. Thanks much for your time and help

  • tomahan Nov 19, 2007

Well, I took apart the door and found its neither the spring or the latch head, its a broken latch hook on the outer door frame assembly. It looks like the only thing to do is order another door frame assembly for $30 as the only other way to reattach the hook is to glue it. I've placed the order for another door assembly, but now have to wait a couple weeks as its on back order. Thanks

My solution was to take the broken latch and drill a 1/8" hole in the section of the latch at the same elevation of the broken hook. Attach the spring in the hole and you should not have any more trouble with this issue.

Usually it's not thespring but instead the "latch head", which has a little loop on the backside to hold the spring. The loop breaks off.

The latch head is the long plastic piece with two protruding hooks which activate the hidden door switches.

The door will need to be taken apart (but not removed from the oven!) to get to the latch head. See the attached example photo.

If you or a friend decide to look into it, we have critical safety and disassembly information at our site, linked here on Fixya: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

You can order Sharp parts from Tritronics at http://www.wehaveparts.com

SOURCE: Sharp Carousel Microwave door latch stopped working door won't stay closed

Normally the problem is not the spring, but a broken spring mounting tab on the door latch head (hook) assembly or the inner door panel.

If it's the door panel, it's usually easier and cheaper to use epoxy and some kind of hardware to fashion a new spring mount.

The door latch head (hook) is easy to replace or repair if that's the issue.

We have *critical* safety & disassembly info at our site, linked here: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

We also have this full service manual at our site: http://www.microwavedisplay.com/R1480_R1481_R1482_sm.pdf

Normally you have to separate the door panels (as shown in the attached photo) and then you'll see the screws you need to remove.

The 2 hooks(latch) inside the door have lost spring tension.

For no apparent reason, the latch broke on the 9187 ST. Take the door off of the microwave, which isn't too hard. Rotate the door to 90 degrees, lift up, and slide it to the left. Place the door on the counter, latch side up. Use a thin knife or screwdriver to lift the panel that covers the latch. It is very easy to remove it from the door. Then slide the latch up and lift is out. The spring is under the latch. The clip on the latch that held the spring was fractured. So, I drilled a tiny hole in the body piece from where the clip extended. I reattached the spring to the latch, replaced the panel, replaced the door, and it is as good as new.

I have a problem with my Sharp Carousel R 1480. The door will not latch and the light will not go out. The hooks on the actual door seem to be in place and working like normal so Im assuming it is...

We have the full service manual at our site here.

If you gently push up on the door latch heads (hook-like devices sticking out of the door) there should be spring tension. If they just flop right up, the spring is off inside.

In some cases, you problem may be a damaged latch head, which is an odd name for what I would call a door switch holder.

I opened the door on my sharp microwave and now it wont latch. it sounded like something snapped off where the door latches to the microwave, not the door itself . Even if the door is held shut the light...

It may be the latch head spring or the door open lever or button.

DOOR SPRING LATCH HEAD HOOK

If you gently push up on the door latch heads (hook-like devices sticking out of the door) there should be spring tension. If they just flop right up, the spring is off inside.

Normally the problem is not the spring, but a broken spring mounting tab on the door latch head (hook) assembly or the inner door panel.

Or you can watch a YouTube video (not a video I made) here that demonstrates how it's done.

DOOR OPENING BUTTON LEVER

What usually breaks is the door open lever, but it may also be that the rear side of the door open button has worn down too far to work.

On a counter top model, the outer cover will need to be removed to diagnose and repair this. On an over-the-range model, only the control panel needs to be removed.

Please unplug the oven first.

Once it is apart, you'll be able to see how the door open button would press against the door open lever, which would then lift up against the door latch heads (hook-like projections on the door) and the door should open.

You can usually find exploded views and part numbers for Sharp models by entering your model number at the Sears parts site.

If not, let me know. We have many Sharp manuals and if we have yours, we can link you to it at no charge.

The best place to order Sharp parts is

NEFF H5470NOGB Microwave door latch fault

theres a small plastic hook inside the door which holds a tension spring this will have snapped off stopping the latch from entering the lock its actually quite easy to fix the inner plastic frame can be unclipped with a small flat blade screwdriver exposing the hook mechanism and the spring will be lying in the bottom of the door frame you can reconnect it to the metal inner frame it stretches the spring a little more but it will never snap again ive done this loads of times with no probs otherwise you will have to replace the outer door to reinstate the broken hook.

The door will not latch

The latch head (with hooklike projections) have a spring to keep it pulled down. If the latch head can be easily pushed up and falls back freely, then the monting tab on the back of the latch head is broken and it will have to be glued or replaced. The new part is better. To get to the door screws inside, you have to remove the choke cover, as shown in the photo. You can order parts for Sharp models from Tritronics at http://www.wehaveparts.com.
