Question about Sony PlayStation 2 Slimline Console
The ps2 (slimline) will not read any disc. the laser does not appear to come on at all... i think this may be why it does not spin because if the laser isn't reading, then it won't know that there is a disc that should be spinning???? can anyone tell me if this is right? if so, what am i going to need to replace and where can i find what i need???
Ok...well all of you people are just **** him! the actual problem is that you probably dropped the ps2 and the case lid got a bit lose...... what you have to do (if you dont want to buy a whole ps2 case again) is tap the ps2 on the top of the lid when it goes into the cd browser screen and it will work perfectly fine just make sure you dont tap i too hard or else we will have another problem...lol!

Try to move the laser forward-back, if you have the unit open it's a good idea to perform some routine cleaning, preferably using a can of air, and check for areas such as the worm drive, and guide arms that may need re-greasing, as these parts can affect the operation of the console if they are dry. if it not work, there is two switch are used to runing laser. 1-eject switch ,2-loading switch. see on pictuce below.
Pls post back should you need additional information. Hopefully this helps.

I cleaned the laser a stated but wasn't sure if it was the problem til i seen the picture where the switches are. so when you have your console open you hold down on those 2 switches, i used the flat end of a colored pencil for the one towards the back and used my finger on the one in the front, then with a disc on the on the spindle push the reset button and keep holding the switches and if your laser is not dead you will see it move and read.
Thank you for the picture! Be careful not to touch anything else, not sure what you could get shocked from.

The lens assembly is directly associated with a non spinning disk issue.
Here was my situation.
I purchased a used PS2 slim from an ebay seller that had the disk read error. I bought another lens from another ebay seller and when installed it, the disk would not spin. I then replaced the new lens assembly with my old one and the disk started spinning again but I still had the disk read error. I contacted the seller to send me a replacement lens assembly for the defective one I received.
Bottom line is if your lens assembly is bad, the disk will not spin. You can replace the lens assembly for about $4 or $5 on ebay.

Check the lens.i have the same problem.
i disassemble it and clean the lens using a cotton bud.
i push the lens holder to align the lens to the center of the metal frame casing.
then is test it and it running good.

Well i know what the problem is , it is the laser obviously as a past experience i have seen that the laser just burns out the only thing you can do is replace the laser your self and buy the part on ebay (laser model number is on the laser near underside) or send it in to sony which is much more expensive .This generally applies to people with the slim line console that has the top of the laser looking white

SOLUTION; Okay, so today i was playing a DVD like normal, and turned off the ps2 (slim) for the day, then at midnight i wanted to play and the disc just WONT start spinning at all, the laser didnt move either, i feaked, after reading all your advice here, i unscrewed and opened the ps2, then i tried starting it and presing manualy the two points (see image above @solution 3) AND IT MOVED (i saw the damn red light from the laser, i hope it doest affect the eyes from arm distance), tried with a disc and it was playing normaly, finaly i screwed the case back, and it works again, i really don't know what happened, somehow the lid wasn't pressing the buttons correctly, even if i didn't move the damn console the entire day, it happened by itself (i know for sure cuz it sits right next to my laptop on the desk, and i was here all day). so all you need to do is opne the case, try pressing manualy to check the rotor spins normaly, and then put it back together, that'll probably be all, it was for me!

My PS2 would power up, but would not spin disc. The front switch arm (part of the lid you open to put discs in) was broken. There is also one on the rear of the lid - without these contacting the switches - it will not power up laser or spin discs.

I just sold mine on ebay *AS-IS* and made $26 off of it. I gave up on trying to fix it. The new laser / spindle motor did nothing, so i still think its the motherboard.

Ok, i had the same issue. Don't panic. Don't open or disassemble anything immediately, don't change lasorz or bust out screwdrivers yet. Try this.
1. Turn it off, unplug it, leave it for 20-30 mins. Try again, pay attention if it's door or whatever its proper name is, the openny thingy, is locked, meaning, watch those two switches, the eject one and the loading one at the back. It may be as simple as that, that those two don't click. Just keep at it, and you'll get the angle right. If it bothers you too much, have it replaced. No biggy.
2. Still nothing? The laser moving thingy might be stuck. Gently nudge it forward. Close the lid, retry. Retry again. Retry 10 times.
The lazor will eventually unblock itself and play nice.
3. Nothing still? My problem was a faulty current supply, the current extending plastic pluggy thingy was malfunctioning, so i replaced it. Voila! It works.
If all of this fails, then have someone look at it, or if you feel confident in your abilities, do some disassembling.

SOURCE: Ps2 slim spindle dont spin
If your spindle has stopped spinning, it will most likely be 1 of 2 problems. Either your spindle motor has burnt up, or even though it is very unlike, a lead wire that supplies the power to the spindle has became disconnected. Now, if the case it the burnt up spindle motor, there are hundreds of motors for every kind of PS on, of course, E-Bay. If the problem is for some reason, a soldered wire has broken from the motor. It is very simple to re-attach the lead with a quick touch from a soldering iron. I hope this has helped.

SOURCE: Disc won't spin,
If your PS2 slim console is chipped for playing fake games then try it by replacing the modification IC otherwise replace the lens with new one and your problem should be solved.

SOURCE: when i put any disc
Sounds like either your spin motor needs to be cleaned.... or it's ready for a proper funeral. Try making sure the area is clear of dust, and maybe get a can of compressed air and blow your system out a little bit and see if this helps :)

First of all the new laser lens will not allow your Slim to read NTSC UC games if you have a PAL european Console.
There is no reason the New laser should have not read the disc unless it Came to you damaged. It sounds like you know how to replace a laser.
