Question about Sony BRAVIA KDL-40V3000 Television

1 Answer

Cannot fill screen with normal picture size setting

I bought the sony kdl 40v300 and connected to time warner scientific atlanta hd dvr box with component video cables. I set up the box to allow all available broadcast formats from 480 to 10180i. Problem is that the picture size on hd broadcasts like espn hd do not fill the screen or are distorted/stretched. The proper picture can be had on the "normal" setting for the tv, but it is shrunken with borders on all four sides. If I select wide zoom, the picture is distorted/stretched with thin bars at the top and bottom. I have tried to adjust picture size using the cable box but all of the adjustments are disabled. Only the sony picture adjustments work but none of them achieve proper picture size, full screen dimensions. Please help.

Assuming you all have comcast and using an hdmi cable
first access menu (hit it twice) and go to set picture format, choose passthrough....or in your case auto hdmi

then turn box off, press guide and info on the front of the box, proceed through the setup, advanced is more in

select 1080, 720, and then either the standard or widescreen 480s to your liking.....

now check your tv settings to accommodate

Hi Jerry, This is from the link below.........
The Time Warner Cable CLIKR-5 is designed to offer complete control for all digital, HD and DVR set-top boxes. The UR5U-8780L is factory programmed to operate Scientific Atlanta/Cisco and Samsung set-top boxes while the UR5U-8790L is factory programmed for Motorola set-top boxes.

Screen goes black and resets during HD shows

Have you already tried to power cycle all the devices? Unplug the power cable on all your devices for about 1 hour then plug it back in. Check if that fixes it.

Top and bottom of the screen are cut off

That set has an aspect ratio of 4:3. The problem is that what you are sending to it is 16:9 So you are sending an hd signal to a non HD television. The tuner is NTSC which is not HD. Theres not much that you can do about this.

Sony Bravia - picture don't fit the screen

I have a Scientific Atlanta cable box w/ Time Warner. I followed the instructions below for the cable box. Somehow it reset my picture and I can now read the ticker at the bottom of the screen and the different picture sizes seem to work properly. Good Luck.

Philips 32pt television screen format off center, to the left

For me it was the cable box settings...

I'm not a tech person, so take this for what its worth. I had the same problem with my Vizio and my Time Warner Cable HD/DVR box using the HDMI cord connection. HD channels were always fine, and non HD channels were fine until I went to an HD channel and back. When switching back, the non-HD channels would be shifted to the left as you describe. After much back and forth with both Vizio and Time Warner (each saying its caused by the other), I stumbled across the following fix...

I went into the cable box (scientific atlanta 8300) "settings", under "display," under "output resolution." There was a list including 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, and "auto select." I unchecked both 480 options and left 720 and 1080 checked. Problem solved. The other "Display" menu settings are as follows: Picture Size = Stretch, Aspect Ratio = 16x9.

Hope this helps.

Normal Picture Mode Not Available With Cox HD-DVR (Motorola DCH3416) and HDMI Cable

With an HDMI cable connected, the cable box determines the picture size. The settings on the cable box must be changed in order for you to get the correct picture size. I have some experience with Motorola cable boxes; usually to access the settings you turn the box OFF and then press the menu or settings button on the box to bring up the display menu. Hope this helps!

Shifted Picture

Yes. This problem comes about by actually pressing the center ring accidentally during normal viewing. Just press and hold the left or right side of the ring until the pciture straightens itself out again (if the black portion of the screen is to the right of the picture, press the right ring; if it is to the left side, press the left ring).

Off Air?

The Scientific Atlanta box was a cable box and recieved CATV signals. The Direct TV box is satellite only. You might check if it has a built in ATSC tuner for off air digital signals. Direct TV in most locations offers the major networks in HD format.
