Sony TXN17P Bluetooth vagaries

I had such great luck with your help last time... how about this one.

This sony laptop has integrated Bluetooth. my last one worked well to hook to my Nokia. This new machine has a Toshiba Applet that manages the Bluetooth connection.

Unfortunately, it doesn;t automatically connect to my phone the way it used to.

Can i delete the Toshiba applet? if i do, will i get the basic XP Bluetooth functions back? it is not obvious that they are installed.

thanks dc

the toshiba applet works fine with my mouse.  it works fine with my nokia for a while after i find and pair the nokia again.

it just refuses to remember that the nokia is a paired buddy.

The toshiba software enables a bunch of networking stuff that i don't use... for instance, it allows me to use my phone as a modem (in theory, the XP driver +nokia software does too but i have never tried).

I will remove the Toshiba software next.  your answer confirms that the XP software is still in there.  On the Sony notebook version just before this, the XP software worked fine, remembered my mouse and Nokia and so, i just want that function back.

    thanks much.  dc

If you can connect manually but it is not connecting automatically, then you have a settings problem either on the phone (less likely) or within the applet on your laptop controlling the bluetooth services. Try that first before reverting to the XP bluetooth software; usually when companies include custom bluetooth software, it is necessary.

If you cannot connect at all...

If you have tried to pair the laptop with the Nokia using the Toshiba applet and it never seems to work, and you've tried adjusting the settings on the phone and in the applet, and you know the bluetooth card is on and running normally on the laptop, I'd suggest uninstalling the Toshiba drivers and software through CONTROL PANEL and then rebooting and see if XP takes control of the bluetooth adapter. If not, try uninstalling the bluetooth hardware in DEVICE MANAGER and then rebooting, which will force XP to do a clean install (including bluetooth support software) and see if this gets you to normal operation under XP. If not, go to the SONY web site and, again, do a clean install of their bluetooth support software for your model, and try again from there. One of these combinations is pretty sure to work.

Make sure that if your laptop has a physical button on it to activate the bluetooth radio, that it is on, and that the device is enabled through device manager/network/connectivity. Any one of these being mis-set can (especially on Sonys) result in a confusing set of inexplicable failure conditions.

Good luck...

Mic is not functionning with my Sony notebook VGN-TXN17p

You probably ended up setting it up as a headset on the PDA, and Headphones on the laptop. A disadvantage of this device is that it can only be paired with 2 devices at a time: A Phone that uses the mic AND the speakers, and an MP3 player or computer that uses Stereo Audio. To use the mic on the laptop, make sure you are using the Headset profile, and not the High Quality Audio profile. In other words, make sure it's a "Hands free audio", and not a "Stereo Audio". Repair the device to change its services.
