Hello Donna, You should check what the local code is for your area. I would think you might have a problem with not having enough draw out the pipe to keep your fire lit.

No. Do not install a 90 first. A certain amount of rise will likely be required first. I would contact the manufacturer if you don't have the installation instructions.

Installing stove pipes for wood burning stove

Look up SUPER VENT STOVE PIPE online. Lowes, menards, and home depot carry it I believe, as well as chimney supply stores. There are diagrams available to help you figure out what is needed based on where you plan on running it.

The double wall stainless chimneys are nice to work with, install relatively easy, and usually satisfy most building codes, but double check based on where you live. You need double wall insulated pipe at your first structure pass through all the way out the roof. Black stove pipe goes from the woodstove to the bottom of the stainless steel chimney. There are mounts, adapters, etc all available to build whatever you need.

A couple recommendations though:
1. Keep the chimney as straight as possible. This will aid in cleaning and air flow.
2. If possible, put the chimney inside the house versus outside. You will have less creosote buildup because it stays warmer. You'll have better draft when starting a fire, and you get the benefit of the heat coming off it to provide more warmth in your home.

What is the minimum vertical vent distant from top of water heater to top of cap. Water heater is stand alone outside furnishing water for military force provider showers unit.

Generally 40 feet for ordinary atmospheric-vented household water heater...
Straight run to roof.
Atmospheric means no power vent... just hot air drafting upwards
Google search: gas vent height code

Atmospheric venting code depends on 4 basic factors:
Diameter of vent--- bigger vent, more draft
How many water heaters are connected to same vent
BTU per hour rating of water heater-- the more gas that is burned per hour, the bigger the vent needs to be
How straight the pipe is -- are there any horizontal or lateral runs

http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/Bosch_Checking_the_draft.pdf
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/checking-the-draft2.pdf

Other factors can include
-wind conditions... higher wind across top of vent pipe on roof can reduce draft, and cause downdraft that blows deadly CO into same room as water heater
-vent termination near high walls, trees, high roof peak etc will reduce draft or cause downdraft
-amount of incoming air supply... if water heater is inside a closed room, then there is no air to draft up the pipe, burner will shut down or burn lazy yellow instead of clear blue
-stuff piled up around water heater that obstructs air intake
-dirty air intake screen that reduces air intake
-vent fans inside same room as water heater that pull air down the vent and cause reduction in water heater draft
-generally elbows reduce draft by 10%
-vent cannot terminate near any window door or air intake for another gas appliance
-bird build nest on top of vent pipe after vent termination falls off
-highly acidic gas by-product causes large amount of condensation inside pipe that burns hole in pipe or drips down and damages combustion parts...blower and inline condensate trap and drain might be required
-multiple water heaters installed on same vent line.

Poor draft on savannah woodstove

Drolets are a real pain at times. Don't buy their pellet stove. Check your stove pipe to insure its clean and not blocked. This includes spark arrestor. Is you stove cap 2' higher than anything 10' away from pipe? Refer to install manual. If you are not getting an y back draft issues with smoke inside house you may need to add on a section of trip wall pipe at the top.

How do i get even heat thru out the house with a daka wood stove

http://www.hearth.com/talk/categories/main-hearth-forums.4/
You burn wood, and smoke goes up flueway.
You're not running chimney smoke through ductwork so you have a heat exchanger.
What kind of heat exchanger?
probably air since you're running through ductwork?
How much hot air or hot water is coming off heat exchanger?
How big of a space can be heated with that amount of heat?
Is the exchanger located in optimal location?

Considerations.
One room log cabin with fireplace will not stay very warm.
One room house with big wood burning stove in center, with hot flue pipe running across the room and exiting on far wall, will get warm-hot, but will cool off fast.
Why?
Because the BTU output of firewood is much less than electric, coal, oil, or gas.
Otherwise they would have made wood-burning steam locomotives. But the locomotive boiler cannot get hot enough with wood ... the boiler needs coal to produce enough BTUs to boil water fast enough to rotate the turbine and turn the wheels.

Maybe your wood stove output should be measured.
Don't forget a huge percentage of fire heat goes straight up flueway.

I have a 3 ft stainless double wall chimney that is going thru a ceiling/roof in my garage. there were no instructions on installation. how is this secured? Pls thx Jer

You can use metal strapping with short self-tapping sheet metal screws also where it penetrates roof a metal collar on inside should be used and a roof collar approved for B-wall vent pipe to keep water from leaking inside on outside on the roof. You can penetrate outside of B-wall vent pipe with short screws to secure the pipe just don't penetrate both pipes.this outside pipe is just a insulator to keep heat from transferring through pipe.

Should the vent pipe be hot

If it is a single wall vent pipe and it goes into a masonary chimney that
has double wall pipe, you can expect the temperature to be over 120deg.

If it is double wall vent pipe all the way to the roof, I would say that
the pipe might be under 100 deg. I guess I would have to no what type
of vent config you have.

If you think that it is way hotter than you can recall in the past, if it has a induced draft blower, make sure it is operating. You could take the vent connection apart at the furnace and make sure it is not plugged.

If you have a water heater tied in with the furnace vent. You could take
a lighter or a match and put the flame near the water heater vent, if it
blows out than you have a problem with your vent system.

Things that could cause this is another fan operating, a gas or wood
burning stove or an attic fan. Could also be due to the chimney vent
not being above the roof line and on a windy day could cause
backdraft.
