1994 suburban gmc - no start in heavy rain or high humidity

Truck will start in very short periods of light rain but if there is a heavy down pour and it lasts for a while the engine will not fire. As the humidity goes down over time the engine will start trying to fire but it will not catch. If I fire up the old hair dryer and point it down the carburetor for a few minutes the engine will start. The carb has not been cleaned for some time. Is there a sensor in there which would cause the engine to behave in this fashion. The problem started last summer. I have no problems in snow.

When was the last time the truck was tuned up? sounds like there is a hair line crack in the distributor cap witch in turn lets moisture get in there and it won't start until it dries back out, the heat from the hair dryer is most likely drying out the moisture in the cap seeing its so close to the throtel body. Do a tune up.

Engine light came on

That often has to do with emissions problems. Has it been raining lately? The check engine light on my Saturn will come on when the humidity is high after heavy rains.

It doesn't want to start when it is raining. Why?

Could be due to the high humidity on rainy days, affecting your possibly deteriorated spark plug wires and blocking the spark to the plugs. Have the wires checked to see if they're bad.

1994 3.0 Merc. Sable (153K miles). Intermittent no start (cranks, but won't turn over). When it does start, it sometimes runs rough until it warms up. The problem first started in the summer time a couple...

This could be fuel not reaching the injectors. Check for a clogged fuel filter or fuel lines. Dirty or clogged fuel injectors. Also difficulty starting after rain can be caused from old plug wires. I hope this helps.

On a 1994 gmc suburban recieving code 78

Code 78 refers to the secondary fan relay circuit, I would start there, you might have a short in that circuit, or an open, or bad relay. Hope this helps, let me know

My 95 gmc suburban wont start when it rains

Ignition wires, cap, rotor and coil are all sensitive to humidity. When buying new ones look for parts with a high dielectric number...they tend to resist arcing better than ones with lower ratings. Wire sets with high silicone content not only resist dampness better but resist burn-through if they inadvertently contact exhaust etc. With ignition parts, generally you get what you pay for...good stuff costs more but is overall better.
