Spitting DVDs out?

I have just bought a new Intel Mac and had a similar problem and have just this minute installed a new CD drive that Mac 'kindly' supplied FOC. It now works fine. The same 'new' computer also needed a 'new' processor... not good for a machine costing £2000+ leaving me with machine down time of nearly a week - who is quality controlling these machines????!!!!

Every company has quality control issues, Remember apple only has less than 10 percent of the market and they are exploding due to the IPOD and ITUNES so they are scrambling to keep up. Of course that not our problem its thiers but they are trying. Just for reference I have a Mac Plus in my garage which can still get on the internet. Quality has been there staple and if they didnt out source so much to keep up with demand I am sure those things wouldnt happen nearly as much.

Macbook combo drive not working

You can try compressed air. If that doesn't work, you can try a commercial cleaning CD. If those don't work, you need to replace the Combo Drive. Sorry.

My disc drive keeps spitting the discs back out, what's the problem?

You did not say what kind of disc: DVD, CD, recordable, etc.

It may be the wrong type of disc or the drive is defective. Only a tech can test it to be sure.

The Mac should work right out of the box! You don't have to install anything. The install disks are ONLY if you need to re-install the operating system which is a once in a lifetime event!

CD/DVD optical drive malfunctioning. Invariable performance with reading and ripping CDs. Cannot read DVDs.

upgrade your CD/DVD firmware from MAC website and install it.
if it does same even upgrading driver then most could be problem in optical lens so better taking back in the same place where you bought it from if its still under warranty.

or if its out of warranty then you need to take to Tech so they can fix it for you.

please post back if anything changes and rate all answers.

Folder with blinking question mark in it after start-up

Folder with a blinking question mark means a missing system folder, in other words there isn't an OS installed. To fix this you need to boot from the OS X installer CD. With the OS X installer CD in the drive, hold down the C key on your keyboard when you start your mac. This tells the mac to boot from the optical drive (i.e. CD drive) and load the OS X installer. From there just follow the onscreen instructions to install OS X.
Also, you should be aware that the ibook is not compatible with Windows XP. Only the newer “intel macs” of the past few years are compatible with XP. Your mac predates Apple's transition to intel processors and Windows XP compatibility on the mac platform by a few years. This is why your Windows XP CD didn't load on it. The ibook is Mac OS X only.
It only runs on Mac OS X however it is compatible with newer versions of the OS. 10.2 jaguar is kind of old and a little buggy. You may want to consider installing 10.4 Tiger for improved stability and performance. Avoid the newest version (10.5 Leopard) as it is geared towards newer and faster machines.
Hope this helps. Enjoy your mac

Can't reinstall onto mac desktop because rom is failling to open and passwod protected

If you can not acquire the password from your friend, and if your CD drive will not physically open:
First, try using a straightened paperclip - insert it gently into the hole next to the drive, and push it in firmly and then out. The CD drive should open.

If it does not, the easiest solution is to buy an external CD/DVD drive and install the Mac software with that.

What kind of Mac desktop is it, and what Mac CD did you purchase? If you bought a Leopard DVD, and the Mac desktop is old enough, it will not work.

Optical drive

Are the disk you are using, are they burned CD/DVDs from a PC? Perhaps the CD/DVD is not fully burned. We get CD/DVDs that after sticking them in a PC find out that Nero was used and the finalization part of burn was not executed because they potential were going to add more to the disk.
